Xbox Claim Digital License is the manual menu route for attaching a supported physical Xbox game to your account during Microsoft’s disc-to-digital Insider test. The feature is not yet a universal public rollout, and current September builds are also becoming more automatic so eligible discs can receive the entitlement with less manual input.
The biggest update to Xbox Claim Digital License is therefore not that the button has disappeared, but that you may not need to press it for every supported disc. Current Insider testing can apply the entitlement automatically after an eligible disc is recognised, while the menu command remains useful for checking or manually triggering the claim.
How to use Xbox Claim Digital License

Xbox Claim Digital License Image Xbox.
- Use an Xbox One or Xbox Series X with an optical disc drive.
- Sign into the Xbox account that should own the digital entitlement.
- Insert an eligible Xbox One or Xbox Series X disc.
- Highlight the game tile on the dashboard.
- Press the Menu button if the entitlement has not already been applied automatically.
- Select Claim Digital License when the option appears.
- Confirm the title is recognised in your digital library.
The process does not require mailing in the disc, destroying it or exchanging it at a retailer. Microsoft says the physical copy continues working normally after the entitlement is claimed.
Why Xbox Claim Digital License may happen automatically
The current Insider experience is being streamlined so supported discs can grant the digital entitlement automatically. The first entitlement can show a fuller explanation, while later eligible discs can use a smaller notification rather than interrupting the player with the same information repeatedly.
That means a successful automatic claim can make the Xbox Claim Digital License menu feel less important even though the underlying entitlement system is the same.
Is Xbox Claim Digital License available to everyone?
No. Microsoft’s official disc-to-digital announcement remains an Xbox Insider test, and the September SEGA expansion is still being reported as part of that testing period.
If you are not in an eligible Insider rollout, the missing Xbox Claim Digital License option is expected behaviour rather than proof that your disc or console is faulty.
Does Xbox Claim Digital License cost anything?
Microsoft has not announced a separate conversion fee. The entitlement is granted from supported physical ownership instead of being sold as a digital upgrade.
Normal costs for Game Pass, online multiplayer or cloud access can still apply where those services require them. Those are separate from the disc entitlement itself.
What happens after the entitlement is claimed?
The supported game is recognised digitally on the Xbox account. Microsoft says the entitlement can then use Xbox Play Anywhere and Xbox Cloud Gaming where the game already supports those features.
The disc remains functional. Xbox Claim Digital License is designed to add digital flexibility to physical ownership, not replace the disc with a one-time code.
Why SEGA matters to the claim system
SEGA games are now beginning to appear in the current Insider catalogue, expanding the number of physical discs that can trigger the entitlement. Persona 5 Royal is one of the examples reported as working.
If a SEGA disc does not trigger Xbox Claim Digital License yet, do not assume the publisher expansion covers every title and edition simultaneously.
What if Xbox Claim Digital License is missing?
First check whether your account actually has access to the Insider feature, then test a known-supported Xbox One or Series X disc. Restarting the console and ensuring current system software is installed can remove basic client-side issues.
If the feature works for one disc but not another, the difference is more likely catalogue eligibility than a broken console. Microsoft says not every title is available and the supported set will continue to grow.
