WoW Forever rulesets offer four choices when the game launches on 4 November 2026 at 11 PM GMT in the UK: Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and Roleplay-PvP (RP-PvP). Hardcore is coming after launch. Your choice determines who you can group, raid and explore dungeons with, so it’s worth deciding with friends before creating your character.
Blizzard has moved away from the traditional realm-selection screen. Instead of choosing a particular realm, you choose the kind of world you want to play in. Normal is suited to relaxed adventuring, PvP adds the risk of open-world attacks, and the two roleplaying options focus on character-driven community play.
WoW Forever rulesets: what’s available at launch?
| Ruleset | When available? | Experience |
|---|---|---|
| Normal | 4 November | Questing, dungeons and optional PvP |
| PvP | 4 November | Contested-zone faction combat |
| Roleplaying | 4 November | In-character community and stories |
| Roleplay-PvP | 4 November | Roleplay with open-world PvP |
| Hardcore | After launch | Permanent-death challenge |
Forever asks you to choose a ruleset, not a traditional realm name. Each ruleset is a larger ecosystem of players who share an approach to the game, and your choice shapes which characters you can group, dungeon and raid with.
The WoW Forever rulesets available on day one are Normal, PvP, Roleplaying and RP-PvP. Blizzard added the RP-PvP launch option in an October 22 update, while Hardcore is planned for a later release.

Normal, PvP and Roleplaying: how to choose
Normal is the best starting point if you mainly want to quest, explore and run dungeons without routinely being pulled into combat with the opposing faction. Player-versus-player activity is available when you choose it, rather than being the everyday risk of a contested region.
PvP is for those who want open-world danger. Blizzard only allows characters of one faction per WoW account on the PvP ruleset, and character creation can be restricted for one faction to help balance populations. Roleplaying centres on in-character interactions and a community with shared storytelling expectations.
WoW Forever rulesets: is RP-PvP available at launch?
Yes. Roleplay-PvP launches with WoW: Forever on 4 November at 11 PM GMT in the UK. Blizzard’s October 22 revision added it to the original ruleset list. It’s designed for people who want both character-focused roleplay and the risk of open-world faction fighting.
Blizzard also intended to offer RP-PvP during Early Name Reservation, which began on 27 October. If you’re choosing your guild’s home, check the actual selection in the Forever client. The explicit one-faction-per-account rule in Blizzard’s overview is written for PvP, rather than establishing a separate RP-PvP account restriction.
Can friends group across WoW Forever rulesets?
No. Your characters must belong to the same ruleset to group up, enter dungeons or raid together. Horde and Alliance also remain separate for grouping, even within the same ruleset. A guild should therefore agree on both faction and ruleset before members create their characters.
Blizzard says battlegrounds may include players from different rulesets, but ordinary questing groups and raids cannot be formed across them. Hardcore remains its own separate environment. Picking Normal while your friends choose PvP won’t let you group together later just because you share a Battle.net friends list.

Can you transfer a character to a different ruleset?
Generally, you create a new character if you want to play in a different ruleset. Forever doesn’t let you freely move an established character between Normal, PvP and Roleplaying simply to follow another guild.
Hardcore has an exception once it launches: a dead Hardcore character can transfer out, including to PvP, but can’t return to Hardcore. Collections and Legacy Points are account-wide across ordinary rulesets, while Hardcore is protected from importing outside progression that would weaken its permanent-death challenge.
WoW Forever rulesets: Hardcore and early reservations
Hardcore does not launch on 4 November. Blizzard has announced it for sometime after release, so there’s no Hardcore start date to use when setting up a launch guild. Our Hardcore guide covers the announced transfer and progression rules.
Early Name Reservation runs 27 October through 3 November for qualifying upgrade purchases. Players can reserve up to three characters in total across the available rulesets. Choosing a second ruleset doesn’t add another three slots. See our reservation walkthrough for eligibility and the client steps.
Do rulesets control language settings?
Instead of picking a language-labelled realm, set Preferred Online Language from Escape > Options > System > Languages and Social. Blizzard says this account-wide setting has a 24-hour cooldown between changes, so choose the language you’ll use for your main group.
The WoW Forever rulesets decision matters more than a realm name: choose Normal for relaxed questing, PvP for faction conflict, Roleplaying for immersive communities or RP-PvP for both. Whatever you pick, coordinate the ruleset and faction with your friends before the 11 PM GMT launch.
