Teardown Multiplayer PS5 is live on PlayStation 5, finally bringing Tuxedo Labs’ 12-player destruction sandbox to console with campaign co-op, competitive modes and online Sandbox play. The multiplayer update is free if you already own any PS5 edition of Teardown, but online play on PlayStation still requires an active PlayStation Plus subscription.
The setup is deliberately simple. Once the latest game update is installed, multiplayer becomes part of the normal Teardown experience rather than a separate download or paid expansion. You can host a session, join an open lobby or invite friends, then choose whether the group is tackling the original campaign, a competitive mode or one of the multiplayer-ready community experiences available on console.
How to start Teardown Multiplayer PS5

To start Teardown Multiplayer PS5, update the game fully and launch the Multiplayer option from the main menu. From there, choose to host a session or join an available game. A host can make a public or private session, select the content being played and invite friends through PlayStation’s normal social features.
For PS5 owners, Teardown Multiplayer PS5 now covers the parts of the game most people wanted to share: heists, free-form destruction and competitive sessions.
Private sessions are the cleanest choice if you are planning a campaign night with specific people. Open lobbies make more sense if you simply want to find a group quickly. Teardown uses player-hosted sessions rather than dedicated servers, so the person creating the lobby is important: if the host leaves, the session closes and everyone returns to the menu.
What can you play online on PS5?
Teardown Multiplayer PS5 is much bigger than a single versus playlist. The entire original base-game campaign can be played cooperatively, Sandbox supports online groups, and the multiplayer framework includes competitive modes such as Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag. Console players also receive curated multiplayer-compatible mods rather than unrestricted Steam Workshop access.
The campaign uses the host’s save and unlocked missions. Friends can join even when their own campaign progress is different, but only the host’s personal campaign progression advances. That makes the host choice worth deciding before a long session, especially if the group wants one save to become the shared campaign run.
For PS5 owners, Teardown Multiplayer PS5 now covers the parts of the game most people wanted to share: heists, free-form destruction and competitive sessions. That matters when you are setting up the session rather than discovering the restriction after everyone is ready.
Do you need PS Plus?
Yes. Teardown Multiplayer PS5 requires PlayStation Plus because Teardown is a paid game using online console multiplayer. Tuxedo Labs says any active PlayStation Plus tier is enough; you do not need to buy a higher tier solely to access Teardown online.
Owning Teardown and receiving the free multiplayer update is therefore not the same thing as receiving free PlayStation network access. If multiplayer is visible but the console refuses to connect to an online session, checking that the account has an active PS Plus entitlement is one of the first things to rule out.
Can PS5 play with Xbox or PC?
No. Teardown Multiplayer PS5 does not support crossplay. PlayStation players remain in the PlayStation pool, while Xbox and PC players use their own platform pools. Tuxedo Labs also says it is not planning to add crossplay going forward, so friends buying the game specifically for multiplayer should coordinate platforms first.
There is no split-screen workaround either. Teardown multiplayer is online only, meaning two people on the same PS5 cannot occupy two places in one lobby. Up to 12 players can join an online session, but each player needs their own supported system and copy of the game.
What to know before hosting
Teardown Multiplayer PS5 works best when the host has a stable connection and understands that the lobby lives with them. The host controls the session and active content, and busy destruction can create more performance pressure than an ordinary solo mission because several players can be moving vehicles, spawning objects and collapsing structures at once.
For the broader rules, our Teardown Crossplay guide covers platform compatibility, while Teardown Campaign Co-op explains host progression in more detail. The official Teardown website is the only external source you need for developer information and future multiplayer changes.
