Teardown Console Multiplayer Update arrives on September 15, 2026 for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, bringing the PC multiplayer system to consoles as a free update. The headline additions are 12-player online sessions, full base-campaign co-op, competitive modes, Sandbox multiplayer and support for multiplayer-ready mods.
Teardown Console Multiplayer Update: Everything New

| Open lobbies | Added |
| Crossplay | Not supported |
| Split-screen | Not supported |
| DLC campaign multiplayer | Not currently planned |
The Teardown Console Multiplayer Update is the largest structural change console Teardown has received because multiplayer touches the original campaign, the sandbox and modded content rather than existing as a separate arcade mode.
Full Campaign Co-op
The entire original campaign works with the Teardown Console Multiplayer Update. A host can load any mission unlocked on their campaign save and other players can join regardless of how far they are through their own single-player progress.
Only the host advances campaign progress. Our Teardown Campaign Co-op guide explains the save behaviour and current DLC restriction.
12-Player Online Sessions
Up to 12 players can join one Teardown Console Multiplayer Update session. That player count covers the broader multiplayer framework, including campaign and sandbox play, although individual community modes may be designed around smaller groups.
There is no local split-screen. Our Teardown multiplayer player-count guide covers the maximum, lobby structure and local-play limits.
Competitive and Sandbox Modes
The Teardown Console Multiplayer Update is not only co-op. Console players can also enter competitive multiplayer and free-roaming Sandbox sessions, giving the destruction engine room to work outside mission objectives.
Open lobbies are supported, so a host can play with more than a pre-arranged friend group. The host acts as the server rather than connecting everybody to a dedicated Teardown server.
Multiplayer Mods
Published multiplayer-compatible mods are part of the Teardown Console Multiplayer Update. Console players do not receive unrestricted Steam Workshop access; Teardown continues to use curated Mod Packs on PlayStation and Xbox.
Joining players automatically download published mods required by a session. Modified local versions are ignored, and mod files need to match across the lobby for the session to function correctly.
No Crossplay
The biggest restriction in the Teardown Console Multiplayer Update is crossplay. PS5, Xbox and PC remain separate multiplayer pools, and Tuxedo Labs says it is not planning to add cross-platform play.
That means friends should coordinate which version they own before buying specifically for multiplayer. Our Teardown Crossplay guide has the full compatibility table.
No Built-in Voice Chat
The Teardown Console Multiplayer Update does not add built-in voice, text or proximity chat. Xbox and PlayStation users can rely on their console party-chat systems, while PC has community chat mods available through Steam Workshop.
Photo Mode is also unavailable in multiplayer, and Creative Mode is not planned for multiplayer at present. Sandbox is the free-form multiplayer option rather than Creative Mode.
Console Performance Still Depends on Destruction
Multiplayer adds more players and more simultaneous destruction, so very busy sessions can be heavier than ordinary single-player. Tuxedo Labs already limits certain spawned objects for performance reasons, particularly when mods create large amounts of physics activity.
How Hosting Works
The Teardown Console Multiplayer Update uses player-hosted servers. If the host leaves, the server closes and everyone returns to the main menu. There is no dedicated-server option and no host migration described in the current FAQ.
The host controls which mods are active, while players’ IP addresses are hidden. Object-spawn limits are also in place because large amounts of physics activity can hurt performance.
How to Start Playing on PS5 or Xbox
To use the Teardown Console Multiplayer Update, update Teardown, open the Multiplayer menu and either host a new lobby or browse open sessions. PS5 needs PlayStation Plus for online play, while Xbox requires an eligible Game Pass online-multiplayer tier.
Our How to Play Teardown Multiplayer on PS5 and Xbox page has the quick setup steps if the new menu is the only thing you care about.
