Silver in Valheim is hidden underground in the Mountains and is normally located with the Wishbone dropped by Bonemass. Equip the Wishbone, explore high Mountain terrain and follow the pulsing signal until it becomes rapid enough to dig.
This metal marks the Mountain gear tier and is used for weapons, armour and important upgrades before you move into the Plains.
How to get the Wishbone
Defeat Bonemass in the Swamp. The boss drops the Wishbone, an equipable utility item that detects buried valuables and Silver deposits.
Equip it before searching. Leaving it in your inventory without equipping it does nothing.
Where Silver veins spawn
Silver deposits generate underground in Mountain biomes, usually at higher elevation rather than tiny low foothills.
Large Mountains are much more productive and are also more likely to contain Moder progression locations.
How to follow the Wishbone signal
Walk across the Mountain and listen for the pulse. The sound and visual effect become faster as you approach a hidden target.
When the signal becomes rapid, dig carefully around the area until the silver vein is exposed.
What pickaxe do you need?
Use an Iron Pickaxe or better to mine Silver Ore.
This is why Swamp iron progression comes first even if you manage to survive in the Mountains early.
How to survive the cold
Use Frost Resistance Mead until you have armour or a cape providing reliable frost protection.
Wet status can interfere with cold survival, so avoid arriving soaked and expecting one mead to solve every environmental problem.
How to mine a vein efficiently
Expose as much of the vein as possible before breaking it. Silver veins are large branching structures hidden inside rock.
Digging around and beneath the deposit can make it easier to see every section and avoid leaving ore behind.
Can Silver go through portals?
Standard Portals block Silver Ore and Silver bars. Stone Portals can move restricted metal cargo, and world modifiers can also change portal rules.
Before you have those options, a Longship or cart is the normal transport solution.
What should you craft first?
Wolf armour, Frostner and other Mountain-tier equipment compete for Silver.
Silver is worth gathering in large batches because several useful items require more than a token amount, and returning to a distant Mountain for ten missing ore is rarely fun.
Silver without the Wishbone
It is technically possible to stumble onto a vein by digging, but that is not an efficient progression strategy. The Wishbone exists specifically to turn a blind search into a reliable one.
Silver in Valheim becomes much easier to farm once you establish a Mountain portal for everything except the restricted ore itself.
