Black Metal in Valheim comes from Black Metal Scrap dropped by Fulings in the Plains. Unlike Copper, Silver or Flametal, there is no Black Metal ore vein to mine. The enemy drop is the raw resource, and it must be processed in a Blast Furnace.
Black Metal in Valheim becomes central to Plains weapons, shields, the Black Metal Pickaxe and later progression, so learning to farm Fuling settlements safely is much more useful than hunting isolated enemies one at a time.
Where to find Fulings
Fulings roam the Plains and gather in villages. Villages provide the highest concentration but are also much more dangerous than fighting one patrol.
Deathsquitos, Lox and other Plains threats can join the fight, so clear the surrounding area before attacking a large camp.

How to get Black Metal Scrap
Kill Fulings and collect the Scrap they drop. Higher-density camps can produce a large haul in one clear.
Black Metal Scrap is heavy and restricted by standard Portals, so make storage and transport part of the farming route.
How to unlock the Blast Furnace
Defeat Moder in the Mountains to obtain Dragon Tears and unlock the Artisan Table.
The Artisan Table lets you build advanced Plains processing stations, including the Blast Furnace required for Black Metal.
How to smelt Black Metal
Load Black Metal Scrap and Coal into the Blast Furnace.
The output is usable Black Metal bars for weapons, shields, tools and building-related recipes.
Best place to farm Black Metal

Fuling villages are the fastest source once your gear can handle them. Approach from range, pull small groups and avoid charging into the centre.
Night also increases Plains danger, so daylight village clears are much easier to control.
What should you craft first?
The Black Metal Pickaxe becomes important later for high-tier mining, including Deep North Ice and other progression.
Black Metal weapons and shields are also strong Plains options, but keep enough bars for infrastructure and future crafting instead of spending the first batch blindly.
Can Black Metal go through portals?
Standard wooden Portals block Black Metal Scrap and finished bars.
A Stone Portal can carry restricted metal items, while the Portal-items world modifier can remove the normal restriction entirely.
Is Black Metal still useful after the Plains?
Yes. Mistlands, Ashlands and Deep North progression still reference Black Metal tools or components in several places.
Black Metal in Valheim is therefore worth stockpiling. A chest of spare bars at your main base saves another Fuling village raid when an endgame recipe unexpectedly asks for older metal.
Fuling village safety
Use terrain and ranged pulls to break a village into smaller fights. Fighting every Fuling, Berserker and Shaman simultaneously is faster only if your goal is to respawn.
Black Metal in Valheim is enemy-farmed rather than mined, so combat efficiency directly controls your metal income.
