Rust sheep shears arrived with the Printed and Polished update on 5 November 2026. They’re a new tool for anyone keeping sheep, letting you collect more Wool from each harvest without accidentally injuring an animal when you hit its skin.
You don’t need to find a blueprint for them first, but you do need a level 1 workbench to craft them. Here’s how Rust sheep shears work and what to do with the extra Wool.
Rust sheep shears: how to get and craft them

Shears are a default blueprint, so there’s no tech tree unlock to hunt down. Craft them at a level 1 workbench.
Open the crafting menu when you have the necessary workbench access and look for Shears. The 5 November developer notes describe the default blueprint and workbench tier, but do not supply a full ingredient list, so make sure the materials you’re collecting match the recipe displayed in your current game.
Although workbench tech trees now use Blueprint Fragments instead of Scrap, Rust sheep shears don’t need a separate blueprint unlock.
How to get more Wool from sheep
The improvement is simple: use Shears when harvesting a sheep. Facepunch says the tool produces more Wool per harvest than the previous approach, making it a practical choice for a farm that regularly needs Wool.
Another benefit is safety. A misplaced hit that touches a sheep’s skin will not damage the sheep when you’re using Shears. That is especially helpful if you’re raising livestock for repeated harvests, where keeping the animals healthy is worth more than getting one quick resource pickup.
The November notes don’t give a precise extra-Wool percentage, so don’t plan around a fixed yield increase.
Do Shears damage sheep in Rust?
No. The new Shears are deliberately designed so hitting sheep skin by accident does not injure the animal. Facepunch singled that out as part of the new item, rather than just changing the amount of Wool harvested.
The protection applies to harvesting with Shears. Your sheep still need food and can be harmed in other ways.
What is the extra Wool used for?

The most relevant new use is the Wool Armour Insert, added to the level 1 workbench tech tree in the same November patch. Facepunch describes it as giving a small increase in protection against melee and projectiles plus a much more noticeable improvement in cold resistance.
Rust sheep shears make it easier to keep Wool available, especially if you’re preparing for cold areas.
The insert is an armour upgrade, not a completely separate suit or piece of wearable clothing. Our Wool Armour Insert guide covers the workbench tier and its intended protections.
How the November livestock changes affect sheep farming
Rust’s October Livestock update introduced the wider system for keeping farm animals, and November made several parts of animal care more straightforward. Ownership, feeding information and animal status are all more clearly represented, so building a working farm is less about guessing what’s happening to your animals.
There is also more incentive to care for young animals. The new Potential stat reflects the animal’s childhood conditions and is fixed once it reaches adulthood, affecting the rewards it can produce. That is separate from the bonus Wool you get by using the right harvesting tool.
Keep the sheep fed, harvest with Rust sheep shears and save the Wool for equipment or trading. The new tool makes that routine safer for your animals.
