Rust Wool Armour Insert is a new piece of equipment added in the Printed and Polished update on 5 November 2026. It uses Wool gathered from sheep and adds extra protection, with its biggest benefit aimed at surviving the cold.
Cold resistance is the big benefit, with smaller increases to melee and projectile protection. The Rust Wool Armour Insert sits on the level 1 workbench tech tree. Here’s what it does and where its Wool comes from.
Rust Wool Armour Insert: how to unlock it

Unlock it through the level 1 workbench tech tree. Unlike Shears, which are a default blueprint, the insert is a tech tree item.
Since November 5, level 1 nodes cost Blueprint Fragments rather than Scrap. Scrap still works at the research table. Our blueprint guide explains the new currencies.
Facepunch also confirms that the Rust Wool Armour Insert uses Wool. It does not provide a complete material count or an exact crafting recipe in the announcement, so the in-game workbench entry is where you should check what else you need to make it.
What protection does the Wool Armour Insert give?
The developer describes three categories of benefit. Cold resistance is the major one, while melee and projectile protection receive smaller improvements. You should think of this as a cold-weather focused upgrade that also provides a little extra defence, not as the answer to every combat situation.
| Protection type | Facepunch description |
|---|---|
| Cold resistance | Large improvement |
| Melee protection | Small improvement |
| Projectile protection | Small improvement |
The exact protection percentages aren’t given in the patch notes. For the numbers and equipment fit, go by the current item details in the game.
Where to get Wool for the insert
Sheep are the source of Wool. Rust’s October Livestock update introduced sheep as farmable animals, and November brought a better tool to collect their Wool: Shears. They are a default blueprint crafted with a level 1 workbench.
Shears collect more Wool per harvest and won’t injure a sheep if you accidentally strike its skin. That makes a regular sheep farm a sensible way to keep the resource available for more than one insert, especially if you expect to spend time moving between cold areas.
Our Rust sheep shears guide explains the crafting prerequisite and why the tool helps you harvest safely. The Rust Wool Armour Insert is the new destination for some of that extra Wool.
Is this a standalone armour set?

No. It is described as an Armour Insert, not a full standalone outfit or an entire set of winter clothing. Its job is to improve protections rather than replace everything your character is wearing.
Check the game for compatible equipment and slots; the announcement doesn’t list every combination or explain how repeated inserts interact.
That distinction is important because the cold resistance increase could be valuable in the Arctic, but the rest of your outfit and equipment still need to make sense for the conditions and any enemies nearby.
Should you use the Wool Armour Insert in the Arctic?
Cold resistance is the main reason to use it. The November patch specifically calls out surviving cold Arctic nights, where a substantial warmth-oriented improvement can make equipment choices more forgiving.
The small combat protection gains are a bonus. Cold resistance is the main reason to choose this upgrade.
