Roblox license revenue sharing: how the Robux split works

Roblox license revenue sharing is the percentage of covered creator revenue that goes to the rights holder after the platform’s normal fees are applied. Roblox automates that split when a licensed agreement is active, so creators do not manually calculate and transfer the licensor’s cut after each sale.

The rate is not universal. Rights holders set the percentage for their licence, and Roblox says the permitted range for licence listings can run from 0% to 95%. Always use the live terms for the IP you are applying to rather than assuming one franchise has the same deal as another.

How Roblox license revenue sharing is calculated

Roblox license revenue sharing is calculated from covered revenue after platform fees.

Roblox defines the rights-holder share against the game’s gross revenue after platform fees, not against the full purchase price before Roblox takes its platform portion. That distinction is important when comparing a licence rate with the number of Robux shown to the player.

For a 100 Robux developer product under Roblox’s example economics, 70 Robux goes to the item owner side after the 30% platform fee. If the licence rate is 10%, the rights holder receives 7 Robux and the item owner keeps 63 Robux.

Example for a licensed game pass

Roblox license revenue sharing uses the percentage set by the rights holder.

Roblox’s documentation gives a different base split for passes. In its 100 Robux example, 60 Robux goes to the pass owner, 10 Robux can be an affiliate fee depending on how the pass is sold, and 30 Robux is the Roblox fee. The licence percentage is then applied to the creator-side amounts covered by the transaction.

With a 10% licence rate, the documentation’s example sends 6 Robux from the 60 Robux owner portion to the rights holder, leaving 54 Robux for that owner. If an affiliate portion is involved under a separate licensed context, that covered portion can also be split according to the licence.

What revenue is covered by an in-game sales licence

Roblox license revenue sharing can apply differently across covered transaction portions.

For the new in-game sales model, Roblox says the rights-holder share applies to the licensed game passes and developer products, not automatically to every other way the experience earns Robux. That limited scope is the reason the system can work for crossovers inside games that have their own unrelated monetisation.

Items purchased outside the game on the Marketplace are also described separately in Roblox’s licensing documentation and are not automatically subject to the same IP licence revenue-share treatment.

When revenue sharing starts

Roblox license revenue sharing begins only when the agreement says it should.

Roblox says revenue share applies to earnings after the licence agreement becomes active. Rights holders can configure licence terms around activation timing, and some agreements may allow monetisation to begin later rather than immediately.

That timing should be part of the production plan. Do not assume you can sell licensed content before the agreement is active or continue selling it after the licence ends.

Why creators should calculate the economics before applying

Roblox license revenue sharing does not automatically cover every unrelated game sale.

A licensed crossover can bring recognition and new players, but the rights-holder percentage sits on top of Roblox’s existing platform economics. Model the expected net return using the actual licence rate, the product type and realistic sales volume before committing large development resources.

The licence can still be commercially attractive, especially when it gives a game access to an audience that already knows the IP. The important part is understanding that “20% licence rate” refers to the covered creator revenue defined by Roblox, not a simple 20% discount from the storefront price.

Roblox license revenue sharing should be modelled before committing expensive development work.

Roblox license revenue sharing should always use the current Creator Hub terms.

Official Roblox licensing information

Roblox publishes its current licensing transaction examples in the official Roblox Creator Hub. Use the live documentation when modelling a deal, especially if the rights-holder percentage or platform economics have changed.
