The Palworld type chart shows which elements are strong or weak against each other, helping you choose the best Pal for boss fights, Alpha Pals and difficult encounters. Bringing the correct elemental counter can significantly increase the damage you deal while reducing the effectiveness of some enemy attacks.
Palworld currently has nine elements: Neutral, Fire, Water, Grass, Electric, Ground, Ice, Dragon and Dark. Most follow a simple chain of strengths and weaknesses, although Fire is strong against two elements and Neutral is not strong against anything.
This guide contains the complete Palworld type chart, every elemental weakness and tips for choosing the right Pal for battle.
Complete Palworld Type Chart

The table below shows every element in Palworld, what it is strong against and which element counters it.
| Element | Strong Against | Weak Against |
|---|---|---|
| Neutral | None | Dark |
| Fire | Grass and Ice | Water |
| Water | Fire | Electric |
| Grass | Ground | Fire |
| Electric | Water | Ground |
| Ground | Electric | Grass |
| Ice | Dragon | Fire |
| Dragon | Dark | Ice |
| Dark | Neutral | Dragon |
The easiest way to use the Palworld type chart is to look at the element of the Pal you are fighting and select the element listed as its weakness.
For example, use:
- Water against Fire
- Electric against Water
- Ground against Electric
- Grass against Ground
- Fire against Grass
- Fire against Ice
- Ice against Dragon
- Dragon against Dark
- Dark against Neutral
Unlike some other creature-collecting games, there are no elemental immunities in Palworld. Using the wrong element will reduce your effectiveness, but your attacks will still cause damage.

Palworld Weakness Chart
If you already know the element of the enemy Pal, this quick Palworld weakness chart tells you which counter to bring.
| Enemy Element | Best Counter |
|---|---|
| Neutral | Dark |
| Fire | Water |
| Water | Electric |
| Grass | Fire |
| Electric | Ground |
| Ground | Grass |
| Ice | Fire |
| Dragon | Ice |
| Dark | Dragon |
This is particularly useful before entering a boss fight. Check the boss element in the Paldeck or on its information screen, then build your team around the strongest available counter.
You do not necessarily need a Pal whose own element matches the counter. A Pal can use Active Skills belonging to different elements, so checking its equipped attacks is just as important as checking its natural type.
How Elements Work in Palworld
Every Pal has at least one element, while some Pals have two. Active Skills also have their own element, and it is the element of the attack that determines whether the move is strong or weak against its target.
For example, a Neutral Pal using a Dark Active Skill can still exploit the weakness of another Neutral Pal. However, the same Pal may not receive every possible bonus that a naturally Dark Pal could gain through its traits, Partner Skill or build.
A strong elemental matchup causes increased damage. Attacks used against an element that resists them cause reduced damage instead.
This makes the Palworld type chart important even when your Pals are at a high level. Levels, attack stats, weapons and passive skills still matter, but an elemental advantage can make a difficult encounter much more manageable.
All Palworld Elements Explained
Neutral
Neutral is the most straightforward element in the Palworld type chart.
Neutral is:
- Strong against: Nothing
- Weak against: Dark
Neutral Pals do not have an automatic offensive advantage against any other element. However, this does not mean they are useless. Many have valuable Partner Skills, strong base stats or access to Active Skills from other elements.
Bring a Dark Pal or Dark attack when fighting a powerful Neutral enemy.
Fire
Fire is one of the strongest offensive elements because it has two advantages rather than one.
Fire is:
- Strong against: Grass and Ice
- Weak against: Water
Fire attacks are useful in a wide range of battles, particularly because they counter both Grass and Ice Pals. Water is the safest answer when fighting a strong Fire Pal.
Fire damage may also set targets alight, causing additional damage after the original attack connects.
Water
Water provides the direct counter to Fire.
Water is:
- Strong against: Fire
- Weak against: Electric
A Water Pal is a useful addition when exploring areas containing large numbers of Fire enemies. Water Pals are also commonly valuable at a base because many have the Watering Work Suitability.
Use Electric attacks when you need to defeat a Water Pal quickly.
Grass
Grass counters Ground but is vulnerable to Fire.
Grass is:
- Strong against: Ground
- Weak against: Fire
One important difference between Palworld and Pokémon is that Grass is not automatically strong against Water. The Palworld type chart uses a simpler relationship in which Grass directly counters Ground.
Grass Pals are frequently useful workers as well as capable fighters, with many offering Planting, Gathering, Lumbering or Medicine Production skills.
Electric
Electric attacks are the best option against Water Pals.
Electric is:
- Strong against: Water
- Weak against: Ground
Electric Pals can be especially useful when fighting Water bosses or travelling through regions where Water enemies are common. Many can also generate electricity at your base, making them useful outside combat.
Bring a Ground Pal when facing an Electric opponent.
Ground
Ground provides the answer to Electric enemies.
Ground is:
- Strong against: Electric
- Weak against: Grass
Ground Pals often have strong defensive or physical characteristics, although their exact capabilities vary. Grass attacks are the best counter when fighting a Ground Pal.
Ground is not immune to Electric damage. Palworld does not use complete type immunities, so Electric attacks can still hit a Ground enemy even though the matchup is unfavourable.
Ice
Ice is the direct counter to Dragon.
Ice is:
- Strong against: Dragon
- Weak against: Fire
Some of Palworld’s most dangerous creatures have the Dragon element, making at least one capable Ice Pal or Ice Active Skill valuable for late-game teams.
Fire is strong against Ice, giving Fire another reason to be considered one of the most versatile offensive elements.
Dragon
Dragon attacks are strong against Dark.
Dragon is:
- Strong against: Dark
- Weak against: Ice
Dragon Pals are often powerful combat choices, but they are not without an elemental counter. Use Ice attacks when fighting a Dragon boss or Alpha Pal.
Dragon also provides the only direct weakness for Dark Pals.
Dark
Dark is the direct counter to Neutral.
Dark is:
- Strong against: Neutral
- Weak against: Dragon
Dark Pals can be effective against the many Neutral creatures found throughout Palworld. However, Dragon attacks can quickly turn the matchup against them.
Some Dark Pals are also active during the night, which may make them useful workers depending on their Work Suitability and passive skills.
How Do Dual-Element Pals Work?
Some creatures belong to two elements, which can change how the Palworld type chart applies to them.
A dual-element Pal can carry the weaknesses and resistances associated with both of its elements. In some matchups, one element may resist an attack while the second is weak to it. These effects can cancel each other out, resulting in normal damage.
Imagine a Pal with both Water and Grass elements. Fire is strong against Grass but weak against Water. Rather than receiving the full benefit of either interaction, the opposing effects can balance each other.
Always check both elements before choosing a counter. Looking at only one side of a dual-element Pal can lead to an attack dealing less damage than expected.
Does a Pal Need to Match Its Attack Element?
A Pal does not have to use attacks belonging to its own natural element. Active Skill Fruits can allow Pals to learn additional attacks, creating more flexible movesets and giving your team better elemental coverage.
However, matching a Pal with attacks belonging to its own element is often beneficial. Depending on the Pal, its Partner Skill, passive abilities and build may improve particular types of damage.
A balanced team should include multiple attack elements rather than relying entirely on one type.
Best Elements to Keep in Your Team
There is no single element that defeats everything. The best team depends on the enemies, bosses and regions you are planning to face.
Fire is particularly useful because it counters both Grass and Ice. Dark is useful against Neutral enemies, while Ice and Dragon become increasingly important when facing powerful Dragon and Dark Pals.
A well-rounded combat team should ideally provide access to:
- Fire damage
- Water damage
- Electric or Ground damage
- Ice damage
- Dragon or Dark damage
You can achieve this through the natural elements of your party or by teaching Pals a wider selection of Active Skills.
Before challenging a boss, it is usually better to build specifically around that encounter instead of taking the same general team into every battle.
How to Check a Pal’s Element
You can check a Pal’s element by opening its Paldeck entry or viewing its details after catching it.
The element icons appear alongside the Pal’s main information. Dual-element Pals will display two icons.
You should also check the element listed beside each equipped Active Skill. A Pal’s natural type does not guarantee that every attack in its current moveset uses that same element.
Palworld Type Chart Tips
Use these tips to get more value from the Palworld type chart:
- Check a boss’s element before beginning the battle.
- Bring attacks that target its elemental weakness.
- Check both elements when fighting a dual-element Pal.
- Equip more than one attack type for wider coverage.
- Use Skill Fruits to improve a Pal’s available counters.
- Do not rely on level alone when the enemy has a strong type advantage.
- Change your party before major Alpha Pal and Tower Boss encounters.
- Remember that Fire counters both Grass and Ice.
- Keep at least one strong Ice option available for Dragon enemies.
- Check the actual Active Skill element rather than only the Pal’s natural type.
What Is the Best Element in Palworld?
Fire has the broadest offensive coverage in the Palworld type chart because it is strong against both Grass and Ice. Every other attacking element has one direct advantage, while Neutral has none.
That does not automatically make every Fire Pal better than Pals of other elements. Stats, Active Skills, passive abilities, Partner Skills, level and equipment all affect combat performance.
The best element is ultimately the one that counters the enemy you are currently fighting.
Palworld Type Chart Summary
The Palworld type chart contains nine elements, each with its own strengths and weaknesses. Most relationships form a simple counter system, while Fire has two offensive advantages and Neutral has no direct advantage.
Use Water against Fire, Electric against Water, Ground against Electric, Grass against Ground, Fire against Grass or Ice, Ice against Dragon, Dragon against Dark and Dark against Neutral.
Checking elemental matchups before difficult battles is one of the easiest ways to improve your damage and give your team a better chance of victory.
