Overwatch Doctrine Abilities and How to Play

Doctrine abilities

Overwatch Doctrine abilities turn the new Support into a flexible mid-range healer who can decide which part of the kit needs an extra burst of power. The key mechanic is Infuse: rather than having one fixed empowered skill, Doctrine can enhance the next weapon shot, movement ability or drone deployment depending on what the fight needs.

Doctrine abilities: the quick answer

Doctrine abilities revolve around Infuse, which empowers the next compatible shot, movement option or drone use depending on what the fight needs.

Eternal Scepter

Eternal Scepter is Doctrine’s mid-range weapon. The same weapon can heal allies and damage enemies, so good play is about switching targets constantly rather than committing to pure healing. An Infused shot becomes a larger piercing blast, which is particularly useful when allies and enemies line up through the same lane. Doctrine abilities are built around deciding how Infuse should change the next few seconds of a fight.

Infuse

Infuse powers up Doctrine’s next compatible action. That makes it the decision point in almost every fight. Burning it on damage can help secure pressure, but holding it for movement or self-sustain can be the difference between escaping and dying. Doctrine abilities cover damage, healing, mobility and teamfight support rather than one narrow healing loop.

Shrouded Momentum

Shrouded Momentum is a horizontal rush that gives damage reduction during the movement. Infusing it upgrades that reposition into free flight, letting Doctrine escape pressure, cross vertical space or take an angle that would otherwise be inaccessible. Doctrine abilities become much stronger when Infuse is saved for the right situation.

Invigorating Drones

Invigorating Drones attach to an ally and provide healing plus an attack-speed boost. The Infused version also deploys drones to Doctrine, making it the better choice when both the teammate and Doctrine are under pressure. Doctrine abilities reward mid-range positioning because Eternal Scepter needs access to allies and enemies.

Deliverance Ultimate

Deliverance releases a drone swarm that reduces enemy maximum health while granting allies overhealth. It is strongest when your team can push into the window rather than watching from range. The effect is designed to swing a committed team fight, not simply top people up between engagements. Doctrine abilities also give the hero a genuine escape option through Shrouded Momentum.

Doctrine’s Perks

Saving Grace adds an immediate 40 healing when drones are applied, while Sanguine Siphon heals Doctrine for half the damage dealt by an Infused Scepter shot. Transfusion reduces Infuse’s cooldown through damage and healing, while Cost of Life trades 25 maximum health for 20% stronger Eternal Scepter healing. Doctrine abilities shown in the trial can still receive numerical tuning before October 6.

How to Play Doctrine

Stay close enough to heal and pressure with the Scepter, but do not sit in one predictable lane. Use normal Shrouded Momentum for routine movement and save the Infused flight for moments where vertical repositioning actually matters. Infused Drones are the safer choice when you expect to take damage yourself; the piercing Scepter shot is the greedier option when your positioning is already secure.

Trial and Full Release

Doctrine’s limited trial runs through September 14 Pacific Time in Quick Play and the Practice Range. The full hero joins Season 5 on October 6, and balance numbers can still change between the trial and launch. Overwatch’s official site will carry the final live values.

A Simple Infuse Decision Rule

Use Infuse on the problem that is about to matter, not the one that already passed. If Doctrine is safe and an ally needs pressure support, an empowered Scepter shot can create value through a lane. If Doctrine is being collapsed on, self-applying the drones or using the flight version of Shrouded Momentum is usually more important than squeezing out extra damage.

Positioning Matters More Than Raw Healing

Doctrine is strongest close enough to alternate between healing and damage without standing on the front line. The movement tool gives room to correct a bad angle, but spending Infuse every time you reposition wastes the flexibility built into the kit. Keep ordinary movement for ordinary situations and save the empowered option for vertical escapes or aggressive rotations.

What to Practise Before Season 5

The trial is useful for learning weapon rhythm, drone timing and when Deliverance actually gives teammates permission to push. Exact numbers may change before October 6, but those decisions are part of the hero’s design rather than a balance value. Learning that flow now will survive small launch-day buffs or nerfs.

Doctrine abilities are most useful when Infuse is treated as a choice rather than an automatic cooldown.
