Minecraft Icicles are the sharp, growable blocks found in Minecraft’s new Ice Cave biome. They hang from the ceiling, grow in darkness, react to nearby light and can hurt players when they fall. This guide explains how to work with the feature in the October snapshots and Bedrock previews.
These additions are still being tested, so the current Java and Bedrock mechanics may change before the stable release. Use the appropriate snapshot or preview and a backup world when trying new blocks, recipes or survival interactions. The key is knowing which rules Mojang has confirmed and which exact numbers have not been published yet.

Where to find Minecraft Icicles
Minecraft Icicles appear throughout Ice Caves beneath the colder Overworld biomes. Search for hanging formations beneath Packed Ice ceilings, surrounded by Calcite, Snow and the new Ice Crystals. Larger icicle-shaped formations made of Packed Ice also decorate these caves, but the thinner individual Icicle blocks are the growable, fragile variety. The Minecraft Ice Caves guide covers the wider biome. Be prepared to cross crevasses and defend yourself from Strays and Frostbites.
How to collect Minecraft Icicles
To collect Minecraft Icicles, work from stable ground beside the formation and break one piece first. Mojang’s update notes explain placement and growth but do not publish a complete harvesting table or establish Silk Touch as a universal requirement. Check the resulting dropped item in your current snapshot or preview before taking apart an entire decorative installation.
How to place Minecraft Icicles
Minecraft Icicles function as spiky hanging blocks, comparable in shape to pointed dripstone. Put a supporting block above the desired position and place the icicle beneath it. The support and available space below affect the formation. For a natural look use Packed Ice as the ceiling material. Keep the floor secure and avoid installing icicles directly above frequently used walkways: falling pieces can hit players or mobs, and an entity landing on the tip takes additional damage.
Growth up to five blocks
Hanging Minecraft Icicles can grow downward to five blocks long in darkness, as long as they are outside the Nether. Leave clear vertical space beneath the formation and keep light sources away. Growth is gradual rather than instant, and Mojang has not published a fixed growth-time guarantee. If nothing changes, check the nearby lighting and the space below first.
How melting and falling work
Bright light can break off hanging Minecraft Icicles while the base stays attached. The Nether also causes the non-base segments to break. Falling icicles damage creatures underneath, and sharp tips can hurt anything landing on them. Always approach from the side when mining or placing light near a large formation.
Surviving an Ice Cave with icicles
Ice Cave paths also contain Brittle Ice above deep crevasses. Don’t combine a fragile bridge with a ceiling of falling icicles. Build a stable route before harvesting, fight Frostbites from solid ground, and place torches where they cannot trigger a formation above you. The Frost Walker enchantment affects nearby water and does not secure icicles overhead.
What changed in October test builds?
Bedrock Preview 26.70.20 brightened the base sides of Icicles and fixed flickering where an icicle joins its support. Java 26.4 Snapshot 5 corrected the underside orientation of ground icicles and stopped mob projectiles from breaking them unexpectedly. These are rendering and interaction fixes, not a confirmed change to the five-block growth limit. If yours behaves differently, check the edition and snapshot version before concluding it has been removed.
