Genshin Impact patch 3.0 brought more than just Sumeru, such as the new Film Notes world quest, split between two parts known as Outlander Brigade! and Mushounin.

If you’ve been struggling with either the Outlander Brigade! or Mushounin parts of Film Notes, we’ve got just the walkthrough guide you need to finish up this Genshin Impact world quest.

If you haven’t yet started the Film Notes world quest series, it can be started by speaking to Furata in the Kamisato Estate in Inazuma. Note that you will need to have completed a previous world quest featuring Xavier, the Seventh Samurai, for this to be available.

Starting Film notes; Outlander Brigade!

The first half of the quest series Film Notes, added in Genshin Impact 3.0, is known as Outlander Brigade! and must be started from Furata in the Kamisato Estate. She’ll direct you to speak with Xavier and give him a hand with his latest project. If you have access to this world quest, there’s a good chance you’ll remember Xavier by now, as you’ve dealt with him before.

Head over to Xavier and you’ll discover that, as the quest series name Film Notes indicates, he’s working on another production now, thanks to finishing the Seventh Samurai with your help previously. His current talent isn’t exactly wowed by his script though, almost being on the verge of walking out when you arrive – you’ll have to step in yourself once again to salvage this production for Xavier.

You’ll be given another line reading part to start with, much like in Seventh Samurai. The lines needed to progress in the first Outlander Brigade! line reading are highlighted in blue in the script he hands you:

  • How did this happen?
  • But I won’t lose like this
  • Don’t underestimate my resolve!

Selecting the wrong line won’t be a big deal, Xavier will simply start the sequence again for you to do them correctly the next time. That leaves you free to try out any of the more questionable lines, such as ‘do you sell food here‘, if you feel like derailing his production a bit more than it already has been.

Following the line reading, we return to something a bit more in line with the Traveler’s talents; a fight sequence. You do have a time limit for this section, but two minutes is generous enough for a fight versus only a handful of enemies unless you’re quite under-levelled for your world level.

If you’re equipped and levelled properly, the ‘bandits’ don’t really pose much of a threat, so just trash them as they appear in front of you. Keep an eye out for the objectives indicated on the floor, as you’re required to move around during the scene too. Interact with the cages when you’re done with the fighting to move on.

Unfortunately, your co-stars perform to a much lower standard than your combat prowess thanks to the lack-lustre script provided by Xavier. When his critique of the actors is thrown back upon him and his writing, he becomes dejected and gives up on the production, for now, informing you that he’ll be in Uyuu Restaurant in Inazuma City.

Make sure to check in on him there when you happen to be nearby. Xavier is a bit drunk by the time you arrive, so you can see just how much the criticism has affected him.

After a bit of back and forth about his Outlander Brigade! script, you’ll have a lengthy talk with both Xavier and the guy behind the counter running the restaurant. Following that, Xavier will head outside without you. Make sure to talk with him when you leave to complete the first half of the Film Notes world quest series, and cash in 30 Primogems for your time so far.

Film notes part two; Mushounin

It’s now time to move on to part two of film notes, Mushounin. You may have to wait till a new day to get started, but after that your first objective will be to go speak with both actors from the failed session, to recruit them for the new script that Xavier is working on.

One of them has returned to Ritou, while the other may be found in the Kamisato Estate. Fortunately, it’s quite easy to reach both by using a teleport beacon, so little effort is required to reach them. Talk to both of them, and by the end of the conversation they’ll both apologise and you’ll direct them to meet Xavier again in the Komore Teahouse.

Following that, you’ll have to wait until 18:00-20:00 in-game time to be able to progress further. Remember that you can skip time in Genshin if you don’t want to wait.

When it comes time to meet up again, you’ll have to head to Komore Teahouse yourself. The other actors are already going over the new Mushounin script when you arrive, and you’ll be given a copy yourself to look over when you speak to Xavier.

The new script is much more evenly spread out between the actors, a good sign of improvement for Xavier. Unfortunately for us, that means all of our lines aren’t in one place this time, making it harder to memorise them.

Fortunately, you won’t have to do that. In order, the lines for the first Mushounin line reading, are as follows:

  • Can the dust settle before vengeance is had?
  • Whoever is eavesdropping outside, come on in
  • It wasn’t your adoptive parents who died.
  • Point to the left.

Pointing to the left really isn’t much of a line, but it does end the line reading sequence with a bit of drama considering what it means in the context.

You’ll once again have to wait until the next evening to progress. This time you’ll have to travel much further afield to continue Mushounin – to the beach between Kannazuka and Yashiori Island. Of course things have been going a bit too smoothly so far, so it’s about time something went wrong.

When you catch up with Xavier and the actors, you’ll discover they’ve had a bit of a run-in with the local Ronin. Fortunately for us, they’re exactly what this film needs, and it’s now up to you to help Xavier out by ‘persuading them’. Violently.

After the fight with the Nobushi bandits and the amusing exchange surrounding it, it’s back to focusing on Mushounin. Talk to Xavier again and he’ll hand you a script once more.

You won’t need to read the script this time, you have no new lines and don’t need to say any for the next part. All you need to do now is film the second act. Your new extras are on hand to help out if you don’t beat them quite as thoroughly in this fight as you did during your ‘persuasion’ talk with them earlier.

The only real issue to be wary of here is the lead Nobushi in red armour and his powerful dash attack – you’ve likely seen it before fighting these bandits in Inazuma. The issue here won’t be the damage though, if it connects with you it can potentially shove you out of the filming circle, which will mean doing the fight sequence again.

You’ve got two minutes in total for this fight scene again, and with the smaller number of enemies it should be easier than the first one from during Outlander Brigade! If you struggle with the clock here, make sure to walk into each of the objective markers during the fight to save a bit of time.

The only real risk if you have enough damage to beat them in time is being pushed out of the ring. To avoid the leading Nobushi knocking you out of the arena, the best strategy is often staying close to him. That charge attack is primarily used to close the gap between you, so sticking nearby will make it less likely to be used in the first place, and makes staying inside the filming circle far easier.

Following the fight sequence, you’ll have to wait one final time until 18:00-20:00 the next day before meeting up with Xavier yet again, this time on the island east of Inazuma City.

If you can’t find them at first, it’s because you’re on the wrong part of the island. Unlike previous appearances by Xavier here, this time he’s on top of the cliff. Grab the Electrogranum from below it and simply use the electro jump points to get up if you didn’t glide to the top of the island in the first place.

Mushounin really has been a journey by this point, but the quest continues. Xavier will give you yet another version of the script, with a third act added on. The third and final act of Mushounin has one more line reading for you:

  • So he’s gone.
  • I’m sorry, I…
    • – There is another fight sequence between these sets of lines.
  • I said the same thing once before.
  • I really like you, Machiko.

You’ll have to deal with one last fight sequence midway through your line readings, and after beating the final Samurai, Wakayama Kojuurou, you’ll have the last two lines to select before the Traveler will ‘fall’ off the cliff in a dramatic ending.

Of course, you have a wind glider, so what’s a bit of cliff jumping to you?

Use the Electrogranum on the lower level of the island once more to skip climbing back up, and then simply talk to Xavier and the crew one last time. Filming is now complete, and the end of this conversation will conclude Mushounin, get you a well-earned 40 Primogems, and end the world quest series Film Notes.

For now, at least. Xavier does seem interested in other regions such as Sumeru, so provided he doesn’t run head first into any Withering Zones we may be seeing him again…
