Destiny 2: Is Guardian Games 2021 worth doing?

Last Updated on: 25th April 2021, 02:07 pm

Destiny 2 events have been steadily getting better as the years have gone on, and this is especially the case with this year’s Guardian Games.

The first Guardian Games, which took place last year, was very bare-bones and straightforward in its content. It mainly amounted to dipping into the same activities constantly to earn medals that would push your class towards a win for the week.

Suffice it to say, the previous year was a fairly uninteresting affair, with the only thing worth anything is the Heir Apparent exotic machine gun.

With the tweaks that Bungie has made to the event, is this year’s Guardian Games worth doing?

The event this year works the same as last year’s, except now you can earn medals from simply doing activities as opposed to doing bounties to earn them.

You still have to do quests for certain medals, like platinum medals, but now you can also just run things like strikes and crucible matches to earn the rest of the medals.

It’s pretty easy to rack up points on a given day when all you have to do run some nightfalls to earn a couple of platinum and silver medals.

In addition to that, you receive some loot when you turn in a medal at the tower; it’ll either be a piece of loot or some resources like enhancement cores or upgrade modules, and they start to add up after a while.

As an example, I went from three enhancement cores to thirty in the span of about an hour of doing some nightfalls for the medals.

For an hour of my time, I received several cores that would’ve taken more effort and time to earn normally, and all I had to do was run nightfalls.

Apparently Above Average

The main draw of this event for many that don’t care about winning the event for their respective class will definitely be the exotic machine gun, Heir Apparent. Previously, you’d have to complete several challenges to earn the weapon, whereas now you have to complete a simple quest to earn it.

Instead of completing lengthy objectives, you now only have to earn laurels by killing enemies with abilities and killing one hundred enemies with a machine gun.

Once these quest steps are completed, the gun is yours and you can then start the quest for the catalyst which is just as easy if a bit longer than the initial exotic quest.

Heir Apparent is a pretty solid weapon, despite not being as powerful as some of the heavy hitters in the game such as Anarchy and Xenophage.

The shield you get for spinning up the weapon’s barrel can help in a pinch and is made much more potent when you obtain and fully upgrade the catalyst.

Competitive Flames

Overall, Guardian Games this year is a better time than it was last year, as its been made much more streamlined while still retaining the bounty focused gameplay of last year. Its not the most stimulating event to ever grace Destiny 2, but Guardian Games at least has some things worth chasing.

The unique playlist that adds modifiers depending on how well the specific class did on a given day adds some variety that makes earning laurels and medals more stimulating.

There is a bit of camaraderie involved with doing activities with the class you’re rooting for, as you’re encouraged to partner up with other Guardians of the same class to earn bonus laurels.

If nothing else, the Guardian Games adds a little bit of spice as we reach the end of this season. Consider giving the event a try if you feel like earning an exotic and maybe some cool ornaments that you can buy with silver or bright dust.

Gear up and stomp those Hunters, Guardians.
