Fortnite Visitor Recordings: All Six Tape Locations

Fortnite Visitor recordings were six hidden audio tapes scattered across the Chapter 1 Season X map in October 2019. They were part of the Out of Time challenges and revealed the Scientist’s plans shortly before the original The End live event swallowed the island in a black hole.

Each tape had a fixed location, from a truck on the Floating Island to the street outside Gotham City’s cinema. This historical guide covers all six original hiding places, the order of the challenges and how the recordings helped players decipher the black-hole numbers.

All six Fortnite Visitor recordings locations

Epic released Fortnite Visitor recordings in three pairs during the final week of Season X. The six locations were Floating Island, Retail Row, Moisty Palms, Greasy Grove, Starry Suburbs and Gotham City. The island has since been replaced and rebuilt across different chapters, so these directions refer specifically to the 2019 Season X map.

1. Floating Island recording

For Fortnite Visitor recordings on the Floating Island, find the yellow pickup truck parked near the main building and its pool. The tape sat in the back of the truck. The island moved around the Season X map, but the recording’s location on the vehicle stayed the same.

Use the building and pool to identify the truck rather than relying on the island’s location in an old map screenshot.

2. Retail Row recording

The Retail Row tape was inside the bookshop on the eastern side of town, near the water tower. Enter the shop and take the stairs. The recording was on the upper landing, so players didn’t need to search every shelf or rooftop.

The Floating Island and Retail Row recordings formed the first pair of Out of Time objectives. Players collected them as ordinary glowing tape pickups during the 2019 Season X challenge period.

3. Moisty Palms recording

For the Fortnite Visitor recordings stop in Moisty Palms, land on the roof of the tall hotel. The tape sat on the white parapet wall around the roof, not in a room downstairs.

Landing on the hotel roof from the Battle Bus was the easiest original approach. The recording was up high rather than in a guest room or on the ground, which made it easy to miss if you searched the building from street level.

4. Greasy Grove recording

In Greasy Grove, the tape was inside the town’s taco restaurant. Go through the main door towards the rear of the restaurant, near the toilets, and check the seating booths. The recording was positioned on a table.

Fortnite Visitor recordings in Moisty Palms and Greasy Grove formed the second pair of Out of Time objectives. Both could be picked up like ordinary quest items once those challenges appeared.

5. Starry Suburbs recording

Starry Suburbs was a small residential Rift Zone near Junk Junction. Find the main red-brick house in the centre of the neighbourhood, go upstairs to the upper bedroom and look on the bed. The yellow recording was waiting there.

Of the final Fortnite Visitor recordings, Starry Suburbs was the one easiest to overlook: the tape was upstairs on the bed, away from the stars falling into the neighbourhood.

6. Gotham City recording

For the final tape, travel to Gotham City and locate the Monarch Theater towards the northwestern side of the Batman-themed Rift Zone. The recording was in the road directly outside the cinema, rather than inside the building.

Gotham City and Starry Suburbs completed the last pair of objectives. Once all six recordings were collected, players had the full set of the Scientist’s messages that later supplied the secret words displayed by the black hole.

What did the Fortnite Visitor recordings unlock?

Epic’s Out of Time missions ran from 8 October until 13 October 2019, before the chapter-ending event. Collecting the recordings contributed to mission rewards such as XP and seasonal cosmetics. Epic described the final challenges as a way to earn a commemorative loading screen and other end-of-season items.

There was also a secret reward connected to the Scientist outfit. After collecting all six Fortnite Visitor recordings, players who owned the Scientist skin could enter a fresh match wearing the outfit and use the computer console inside the Dusty Depot rocket warehouse. That unlocked the white colour style for the Scientist.

Fortnite Visitor recordings served two purposes. They told the Scientist’s story and, once collected, allowed players to use the Dusty Depot console to unlock his secret white style.

What did the Scientist say in the recordings?

The six tapes spoke about the Seven, the unstable Zero Point, the Loop and the difficulty of completing the Scientist’s mission from inside the island’s repeating reality. They also mentioned activating the beacon when the timer reached its end.

After The End event on 13 October, numbers appeared around the black hole. Players took the words in the combined Fortnite Visitor recordings transcript, counted their positions and used those positions to decode the 18-number message. The clue indicated that the Scientist wasn’t alone and that others had been outside the Loop.

That connection gave the tapes a second life after the island disappeared. They weren’t just collectibles left in a few unusual buildings; they were the key to the puzzle Epic left on screen during the 36-hour blackout.

Are the original Fortnite Visitor recordings still available?

The 2019 Out of Time mission ended when Season X concluded on 13 October 2019. The six original challenge pickups and the associated white Scientist unlock method are part of Fortnite’s Chapter 1 history, rather than objectives in the current OG Season X Pass.

For footage of what followed, our Fortnite Live Events History archive contains the Chapter 1 finale. You can also explore the original Chapter 1 maps to see the Rift Zones and Dusty Depot as they appeared during that season.

The last six tapes also gave the black-hole number puzzle its solution. Anyone who remembered the Scientist’s messages could connect the strange digits to words they’d heard before the finale.
