Fortnite Simple Edit removes the need to manually select squares on every building piece. When you look at a supported part of a structure, one edit input can make the change for you. It’s available in the Game settings, but Epic restricts it in competitive modes, which explains why many players think the option has stopped working.
If you’re learning to build, this can make opening a wall or resetting a structure much less fiddly. It won’t behave exactly like traditional editing, though, and the Tap To Simple Edit option changes whether you press once or hold your edit input. Here’s what the controls actually do.
How to turn on Fortnite Simple Edit
Open Fortnite’s Settings and select the Game tab. Scroll to the Editing section and locate Simple Edit, then change it to On. If you’d like a single press to carry out the action, enable Tap To Simple Edit as well. Apply your changes and enter a building-enabled mode to try them. You don’t need to download a separate add-on or import a creator’s control preset.
How Simple Edit works when you’re building
Aim your reticle at the section of your own build you want to change, then use the assigned edit command. Fortnite Simple Edit determines an edit from where you’re looking instead of asking you to select grid tiles manually. Look at a different part of a wall or floor and the result can change. Practice with a single wall first, where the relationship between your aim and the altered piece is easy to see.

Fortnite Simple Edit: tap To Simple Edit versus holding the edit button
Epic describes Tap To Simple Edit as the option for editing with a single press. Turn it off if you prefer to hold and drag or control the edit-timer duration. This is separate from the master toggle for Simple Edit itself. If your edit fires earlier than you’re expecting, check Tap To Simple Edit rather than changing every sensitivity or keybind in your account.
Why Fortnite Simple Edit doesn’t work in Ranked
Epic explicitly says Fortnite Simple Edit is unavailable in competitive game modes. A setting that works in a normal build-enabled playlist may be disabled when you switch to a competitive event or mode subject to those restrictions. That’s not evidence your keybinds have corrupted. Switch to an eligible building mode to confirm the control still works before resetting a perfectly good configuration.
Does Simple Edit replace normal editing?
It is an alternative way to perform edits; it doesn’t remove the classic editing controls from Fortnite. Traditional tile selection remains useful for players who need to choose a precise shape rather than the edit suggested by their reticle. Test each approach in a safe practice area and keep the one that suits your building habits. Simple Edit is less useful in Zero Build, where players aren’t editing their own constructed pieces.

What if the setting is missing?
Open the Game tab rather than searching under Controller or Video. Select a mode that supports player-built structures and leave the competitive playlist if you’re testing availability. If the option appears but resets each launch, check whether other settings save too. PC file permissions and a stale configuration can cause wider settings persistence problems that won’t be fixed by repeatedly changing the edit toggle.
Good first practice for Simple Edit
Place a wall, stand near it and aim at different sections while using your edit control. Observe which opening appears, reset it, then try a floor and ramp. Fortnite Simple Edit becomes easier to understand when you’re not also being shot at. Once the result feels predictable, introduce it to ordinary matches before deciding whether to replace your established edit bindings.
