Fortnite Reload reboot timer rules changed on October 15 with update 42.40. Rebooting takes longer at the baseline than it did before, but several ordinary actions now shorten a knocked-out teammate’s return timer. Opening chests, searching small containers and dealing damage all help.

The Fortnite Reload reboot timer now rewards surviving teammates who loot and deal damage, even when they aren’t getting eliminations. The amount saved depends on the action, with Rare Chests offering more than regular Chests. Here’s the current reduction table and how to use it during a match.

Duos and Squads: the new reboot countdowns

Epic increased the starting countdowns by 15 seconds at each stage. In Duos, the published new values are 27, 27, 27, 29, 31 and 31 seconds. For Squads, they’re 45, 45, 45, 50, 50, 55 and 55 seconds. The Duos list in Epic’s notes contains one fewer value than the previous list, so a perfect phase-by-phase comparison isn’t possible from the announcement alone.

PlaylistReboot times by phase (seconds)
Duos27 / 27 / 27 / 29 / 31 / 31
Squads45 / 45 / 45 / 50 / 50 / 55 / 55

Eliminations still help. A down removes two seconds in either playlist. An elimination removes three seconds in Duos or four in Squads, while wiping a team saves five or ten seconds respectively. You can combine these with the new chest and damage reductions, but keeping one teammate alive is still the priority.

Every new reboot timer reduction

Searching ammo boxes and small containers reduces the timer by one second. Opening a regular Chest cuts two seconds, while a Rare Chest cuts four seconds. Dealing thirty damage also removes one second from the timer.

Fortnite Reload reboot timer reductions work alongside the older elimination-based bonuses, which remain in the mode. You can combine looting and fighting while a teammate is waiting rather than relying only on kills.

How opening chests helps a knocked-out teammate

When a teammate is awaiting reboot, opening a regular chest contributes a two-second reduction. A Rare Chest contributes four seconds. These actions already fit natural Reload gameplay because your surviving squad needs weapons and healing.

The Fortnite Reload reboot timer doesn’t automatically disappear because you’ve opened one chest. The benefit is a small deduction from the remaining countdown, so use it alongside safer positioning and normal combat.

How damage reduces the reboot timer

Each thirty damage dealt reduces the timer by one second under the new system. That makes ordinary hits useful even if an enemy isn’t eliminated before you reposition.

The reduction applies to damage dealt while a teammate is waiting to reboot. Watch the countdown as you fight to see the seconds come off. Fortnite Reload reboot timer reductions are described in terms of damage dealt, so focus on combat actions that already help your team rather than exploiting unclear interactions.

Why reboots feel slower after 42.40

Epic has increased the underlying reboot stages, meaning the base countdown may feel longer despite the additional ways to shorten it. You need to compare both changes rather than looking only at the number of seconds removed by one action.

A teammate’s timer might remain higher than you remember from an earlier week. The Fortnite Reload reboot timer update intentionally balances a slower base with more opportunities for the living team to contribute.

Are eliminations still useful for a reboot?

Yes. Epic explicitly retains the existing elimination-based reductions. Finishing a fight can still help bring a teammate back, but it isn’t the only useful action in the new rules.

This is why Fortnite Reload reboot timer strategy is less dependent on chasing every opponent. You can loot a nearby building and survive while still working towards the next return.

What should your squad do after losing a teammate?

Prioritise staying alive and finding safe loot sources. Open accessible chests or small containers, deal damage when an appropriate fight presents itself and avoid charging an entire squad only to shorten the timer.

Fortnite Reload reboot timer reductions are helpful only if at least one squad member survives long enough for a reboot. A rare chest is worth four seconds, but not the complete loss of your remaining teammate.

Current reboot reduction table

Ammo and small containers save one second; normal Chests save two; Rare Chests save four; thirty damage dealt saves one. The old elimination deductions remain, but stage timers have increased.

With Fortnite Reload reboot timer changes, make those actions part of normal survival rather than a separate chore. The current in-game countdown is the final indicator of how close your teammate is to returning.
