Fortnite on Linux isn’t available through an officially supported Linux client in October 2026, but Epic Games has confirmed that it intends to change that. Its October 14 announcement introduces Easy Anti-Cheat Linux v2, a new security system that Epic plans to test in Fortnite before offering it to other developers.

There is also a native Linux preview of the rebuilt Epic Games Launcher that you can download today. That doesn’t mean Fortnite itself is ready. The anti-cheat work still needs testing, and Epic hasn’t announced a release date, so it’s worth knowing exactly what has changed and what hasn’t.

Can you play Fortnite on Linux right now?

No. Epic says its existing Linux Easy Anti-Cheat implementation hasn’t offered the level of protection it requires for Fortnite. Although EAC has supported native Linux games since 2014 and optional Wine/Proton compatibility since 2021, each developer has to enable that option for its game. Fortnite hasn’t done that.

Installing Proton, downloading the Windows client or using the Linux launcher preview will not bypass Fortnite’s anti-cheat restrictions. The game needs Epic’s new support before Fortnite on Linux becomes a normal supported way to play.

What Epic announced about Fortnite on Linux

On October 14, Epic introduced Easy Anti-Cheat Linux v2. It is rebuilding its Linux anti-cheat around existing operating-system protections to help verify that protected games haven’t been modified. Epic says Fortnite will be its first real-world pilot for the technology.

The company is working with Linux distribution maintainers on the required security configuration. Once enough distributions support those requirements, Epic plans to bring Fortnite on Linux through the Epic Games Launcher. It also intends to release the EAC improvements to other developers.

Fortnite on Linux release date: when can you play?

Epic hasn’t announced a date, month or release window. Its October 14 posts describe the work being done, not a launch players can download. A discussion with Linux developers planned for later in 2026 is about improving compatibility and should not be mistaken for a Fortnite release date.

There is no confirmed public Linux beta, preload or launch-day support list. A specific date posted by someone other than Epic isn’t a confirmed release schedule.

What does Easy Anti-Cheat Linux v2 require?

Epic’s technical announcement describes the security checks it expects from supported systems. These are planned requirements for protected gameplay once EAC Linux v2 is ready. Meeting them today won’t unlock Fortnite on Linux.

RequirementWhat Epic confirmed
Kernel signingSigned kernel and loaded modules using recognised keys
TPM 2.0Hardware support enabled in firmware
Secure BootUEFI Secure Boot enabled with recognised keys
Measured BootBoot-chain measurements available
IOMMUEnabled for non-handheld devices, with passthrough disabled
Kernel lockdownIntegrity mode enabled
KexecDisabled during anti-cheat-protected sessions
BPF LSMActive Linux Security Module BPF support

The Linux implementation won’t install an equivalent of its Windows anti-cheat kernel driver. It instead uses built-in Linux security features, eBPF logic and a systemd service that starts with a protected game and stops when the game closes. Epic says failing a requirement will display an error, not automatically ban a player.

Epic is also maintaining a list of recognised signing authorities, including those used by Ubuntu, Fedora, Debian, Universal Blue and others. That doesn’t mean every existing installation of those systems automatically qualifies.

Will Fortnite on Linux work on Steam Deck?

Steam Deck currently lacks features required by EAC Linux v2. Epic says it is discussing those limitations with Valve and hopes to support the handheld in the future. A SteamOS release has not been confirmed, and there is no timetable.

Epic’s stated distribution plan is the Epic Games Launcher, not a Steam store listing. If Steam Deck support eventually arrives, the operating system and anti-cheat requirements will still need to be resolved.

Can you install the Epic Games Launcher on Linux today?

Yes. The new launcher preview officially supports Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or newer, Fedora 43 or newer and Debian 12 or newer. It comes as a Linux AppImage, needs a 64-bit x86-64 dual-core CPU at 2GHz or more, 4GB RAM and 2GB available storage.

You can sign into your Epic account and browse your library. Windows-only games may still require a compatibility layer and individual game support. That is why the existence of a Linux launcher doesn’t make Fortnite on Linux available.

Will Fortnite work through Proton or Wine instead?

Not through an officially supported route. Proton can run many Windows games, but Epic’s older Linux anti-cheat support is optional on a per-game basis. Fortnite has not enabled it. Changing a Proton version, replacing game files or editing anti-cheat components does not change that decision.

There is also no benefit in changing Secure Boot or TPM settings solely to prepare for an unannounced Fortnite launch. Epic can refine the EAC Linux v2 requirements before release, and the game itself still needs to be made available.

What should players do while waiting for Fortnite on Linux?

If you want to test the new launcher, you can download it for supported distributions and use games that are already compatible. Otherwise, play Fortnite on an officially supported platform while Epic finishes the Linux rollout.

The news is encouraging because Epic has moved beyond simply explaining the anti-cheat obstacle and has announced concrete development work. For now, however, Fortnite on Linux is a future plan, not a playable release.
