Fortnite Epic Quality Assets: What They Are and Should You Install Them?

Fortnite Epic Quality Assets

Fortnite Epic Quality Assets is the new PC install option that appeared with v42.30, and the unfamiliar name makes it sound more dramatic than it is. Epic has effectively replaced the old High Resolution Textures option with a broader way to keep Epic-quality gameplay assets installed locally instead of depending on your connection to stream them when needed.

The important distinction is that this is not a new graphics preset hiding inside Fortnite’s Video menu. Fortnite Epic Quality Assets lives in the Epic Games Launcher installation options, changes which assets are stored on your PC, and leaves cosmetics on the on-demand streaming system. Whether you should install it therefore depends as much on storage and internet quality as it does on the GPU in your machine.

What Fortnite Epic Quality Assets actually downloads

Fortnite Epic Quality Assets downloads Epic-quality gameplay content such as map terrain and objects to your PC. Epic says cosmetics continue to download on demand, so checking the option does not mean your install suddenly needs to contain every Outfit, Back Bling and Pickaxe in Fortnite.

That separation is sensible. Terrain and environmental objects are things you repeatedly need while playing matches, while the enormous cosmetic catalogue changes depending on the players around you. Keeping core high-quality world assets local can reduce your dependence on streaming without turning the Locker into an ever-growing local archive.

Did Epic Quality Assets replace High Resolution Textures?

Yes. Fortnite Epic Quality Assets replaces the previous High Resolution Textures option in the Epic Games Launcher. If you already had High Resolution Textures installed before v42.30, Epic says you are switched over automatically.

That is why older Fortnite performance guides now look wrong when they tell you to open Launcher Options and simply untick High Resolution Textures. The label has changed, and the new option covers Epic-quality gameplay assets rather than using the old wording.

How to install Fortnite Epic Quality Assets

To install Fortnite Epic Quality Assets, open the Epic Games Launcher, go to Library, find Fortnite, click the three dots on its game tile and choose Options. Check Epic Quality Assets, apply the change and let the Launcher download the additional files.

  1. Open Epic Games Launcher.
  2. Select Library.
  3. Click the three dots on Fortnite.
  4. Choose Options.
  5. Check Epic Quality Assets.
  6. Apply the change and wait for the download to finish.

You do not need to change Fortnite’s Rendering Mode just to install the assets. Launcher installation choices and in-game graphics settings are separate controls.

Should you install Epic Quality Assets?

You should consider Fortnite Epic Quality Assets if you have enough storage, regularly use higher visual settings and would rather keep high-quality map assets on the PC than depend on streaming. The option is especially attractive on a desktop with a fast SSD and a connection that is either inconsistent or shared with other people.

You can reasonably leave it unchecked if storage is tight, you mainly play Performance Mode at low settings, or you are happy with Fortnite’s asset streaming. There is no competitive rule saying serious players must install it, and there is no reason to sacrifice badly needed drive space just because the word “Epic” sounds like the recommended setting.

Does Epic Quality Assets improve FPS?

Fortnite Epic Quality Assets is not an FPS boost setting. Installing higher-quality assets does not make your GPU render faster. If anything, the visual settings you choose in-game remain much more important to raw frame rate than whether these files are stored locally.

The benefit is about asset availability and visual consistency, not magically increasing frames. If your goal is maximum FPS, tune Rendering Mode, resolution, frame-rate cap, shadows and other expensive graphics settings first. Then decide whether you want the local asset download.

Does it reduce stutter?

Fortnite Epic Quality Assets can reduce your dependence on downloading Epic-quality world assets during play, but it should not be marketed as a universal stutter fix. Fortnite stutter can come from shader compilation, driver issues, CPU limits, background software, storage pressure and network streaming, among other causes.

If your stutter is clearly connected to assets loading over a limited connection, local files may help that specific part of the experience. If your frame-time graph is a mess even with excellent bandwidth and assets already cached, look elsewhere before blaming streaming.

What still downloads on demand?

Cosmetics still download on demand when Fortnite Epic Quality Assets is installed. Epic explicitly keeps Locker content on the streaming system so the install does not grow endlessly as more cosmetics are released.

That means you can still see a cosmetic take a moment to reach full detail even though the map itself is using locally stored Epic-quality assets. The two systems are not contradictory. One handles core gameplay content and the other keeps the cosmetic library flexible.

How Fortnite prioritises your connection

Epic says Fortnite has also been improved to balance bandwidth between gameplay and streamed assets. Since v42.20, the game prioritises the connection needed to keep matches running, then uses spare bandwidth to load cosmetics and world content faster.

This matters when deciding whether Fortnite Epic Quality Assets is necessary for you. A good connection is not supposed to be sacrificed just to pull textures more aggressively. Fortnite should protect gameplay traffic first, although a congested home network can still create problems outside the game’s control.

Epic Quality Assets and Performance Mode

You do not need Fortnite Epic Quality Assets just because you use Fortnite Performance Mode. Performance Mode deliberately prioritises frame rate and responsiveness over high-end visual quality, so a player using it on a lower-spec PC may prefer to save the disk space instead.

On the other hand, installing the assets does not force you to stop using Performance Mode. The Launcher option controls what is stored locally. Rendering Mode controls how Fortnite draws the game. Treat them as separate decisions.

How to remove Epic Quality Assets

To remove Fortnite Epic Quality Assets, return to Fortnite’s Options in the Epic Games Launcher and uncheck the option. Apply the change and let the Launcher update the installation.

Do this because you actually need the space, not because an old guide still says “remove High Resolution Textures.” That old label is exactly what changed in v42.30, and following stale instructions is how PC optimisation advice becomes confusing very quickly.

Best choice for most players

For most PC players, Fortnite Epic Quality Assets is a preference rather than a requirement. Install it if you value high-quality world assets, have comfortable SSD space and want to reduce reliance on streaming. Skip it if you are fighting for storage, play on low visual settings or have no visible problem with Fortnite’s current streaming behaviour.

The good news is that this is reversible. You are not making a permanent graphics decision. Try the local asset option, watch your storage use and real-match behaviour, and keep it only if the trade makes sense on your PC.
