Fortnite controller stops working mid-match for some players even though they can still zoom in or out. Epic has documented that exact symptom. On PC, its official advice is to check input devices and controller settings before submitting a bug report.
A controller that loses every button is a different problem from stick drift, and the fix depends on whether Windows, the console, or only Fortnite has stopped responding. Work through the checks below without resetting your whole control layout.
Check whether Fortnite still detects the controller
Open a Fortnite menu and see if any gamepad buttons respond. Then try the controller in Windows Game Controllers, another game, or the console dashboard. If nothing recognises it, check USB, Bluetooth pairing, charge and firmware first. If only Fortnite loses input, continue with the game’s own controls. Epic acknowledges a specific mid-game problem where only zoom controls work; it may need a bug report when regular troubleshooting fails.
Turn off Ignore Controller Input on PC
Open Settings in Fortnite, select Mouse and Keyboard and find Ignore Controller Input. Make sure it is Off. Apply, then try movement, jump and interact again. This setting can make the controller appear broken while mouse and keyboard still work. Fortnite controller stops working after swapping devices when an input option has changed, so checking this toggle is much more relevant than altering your aim sensitivity.

Fortnite controller stops working: reconnect and try another connection
For a wired gamepad, close the game and connect directly to a different USB port rather than a malfunctioning hub. Wireless controllers should be paired again through the device’s usual Bluetooth or receiver controls. Test whether the controller works reliably outside Fortnite before reconnecting. Avoid uninstalling every USB driver without knowing which device failed; Fortnite controller stops working for many reasons, including power saving and hardware disconnection.
Update controller firmware and device drivers
Check the manufacturer’s official application for firmware updates and Windows’ Device Manager for driver recognition. On Xbox controllers, Xbox Accessories may offer updates; other gamepads have their own support tools. Restart Fortnite after updating and retest. Changing Fortnite controller sensitivity isn’t a substitute for a connection that repeatedly drops. If the controller has issues in every application, the manufacturer may need to help.
Fortnite controller stops working: what if you can only zoom in and out?
Epic’s support page specifically describes the case where all actions stop except camera zoom. It directs PC players to device troubleshooting, and asks affected players on other platforms to submit an in-game bug report. Don’t claim a specific deadzone value cures that known behaviour: a deadzone affects stick movement, not every missing action button. Write down when the fault first occurs and whether opening a particular screen precedes it.

Fortnite controller stops working: remove interfering inputs temporarily
Disconnect spare controllers, steering wheels and virtual input devices while testing. On PC, close third-party controller remappers or overlays that change inputs, then see whether Fortnite controller stops working again. Re-enable accessories one at a time so you can identify a conflict. Don’t permanently disable important security protections or install undocumented drivers to force an input mode. If a game update began the problem, check Epic’s known issues too.
Report a reproducible controller failure
If the controller works elsewhere, Ignore Controller Input is Off and the issue persists with current drivers, use Fortnite’s in-game bug reporting. Include your platform, game mode, controller model and the exact actions that still work. If it happens mid-match, note whether it followed a menu, vehicle or mode switch. Epic specifically recommends reporting the zoom-only bug when the ordinary troubleshooting doesn’t resolve it.
