Cloud9 Jensen interview: “I’m excited to play against EG”

Jensen On Stage After A Loss To Team Liquid Honda During The 2022 LCS Summer Split

Last Updated on: 28th August 2022, 12:56 pm

Coming off of the banger five-game series against Counter Logic Gaming, Cloud9’s Jensen sat down with me for an interview. We were able to talk about the series, the team’s next matchup in Evil Geniuses, and if name-brand players were actually riding on their previous success.

Any questions that are asked will be in a bold font and Cloud9 Jensen’s answers will be in a standard font.

Cloud9 Jensen interview transcript

Coming off an exhausting, from the viewer’s perspective, series against CLG. You have the first series win of the playoffs, next you’re against EG, how’re you feeling?

Relieved, I guess. I’m happy that we were able to get the win after the series being so back and forth. I’m excited to play against EG now. I’m happy that we were able to get the win today because it definitely could have gone either way.

In this series, it seemed that the blue side won every single game. Was there something specific about the blue side to get the first pick, so you could get champions like Zeri or Azir first, or was it the way that drafts fell that the blue side always had an advantage?

I’m not entirely sure. Right now there’s not a side that is super advantageous. I think that it’s kind of just a coincidence. The first picks didn’t feel too impactful, at least in my eyes. It’s not like there’s a champion that’s permabanned every game that made it through that was game-changing by any means. I think it was just a pure coincidence in my eyes.

In the last game of the series, you played Leblanc, who was banned against you for the majority of the series. When you got it, did you feel like you were going to show them why they should have kept it banned?

It’s kind of a comfort pick of mine. I think once you go to game five the most important thing is that you’re comfortable. It always feels good for me to play Leblanc, so I was happy I was able to get it. It’s not like I think it’s super broken right now, but it felt right in the moment, and I’m happy that it worked out.

Today you played against Palafox. Earlier in the split, he had mentioned that he thought name brand players were riding on their past success, and not really performing up to their names. Do you think that criticism for you specifically was valid?

I mean I think at the time I wasn’t playing super amazingly, but at the same time, it was a bit ironic because I think the next day we scrimmed CLG and we beat them 6-0, and they couldn’t breathe. So it was a bit ironic when I read that interview afterward or saw the headline at least.

I mean it is true, I think the players you’re talking about, I think it was directed at me, Bjergsen and maybe some others. We have been a bit inconsistent in the regular season, where I think in the past we were known for being very clutch and consistent.

I think at the same time, it’s a quality that we have when it really matters. That’s probably something that he really didn’t see at the time because we were making a lot of mistakes on stage. So it’s a bit justified, but if he was able to go back and watch past playoff series, I think he would not say a comment like that.

I think these days, the newer players have caught up to the old guard when it comes to mechanics. The game is not that difficult once you reach the top level mechanically. It’s more the small things, like the decision-making in the moment that really makes a player stand out in my eyes, especially in those clutch situations.

Your next opponent is EG. They were the first place team in the LCS, and lots of players were saying that they were the best team all-around. are you excited to play against them next, are you nervous, do you have a gameplan to bring the old champions out against Jojopyun like Anivia. What’s going through your head?

I mean it’s going to be exciting. It’s been a while since I’ve gone into a playoff series thinking that we’re going to be the underdog, and it’s always nice to be the underdog, so I’m just excited. We lost 2-0 to them in the regular season, but I think that we can definitely compete with them.

They are a really good team, we definitely have what it takes to beat them, but it’s going to be a tough one. I think that we need to really think about what happened today first, take what we learn from that and we’ll see how we do against EG, but they are really a tough opponent.
