The ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle is one of the hidden challenges in the Nowhere Vault, introduced with Update 51 of The Elder Scrolls Online. It involves summoning a secret boss called the Stewmaster using a Carafe of Salt Water, then defeating it to obtain Connoisseur’s Vision.
Before you can complete the ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle, you’ll need to solve two earlier secrets in the Cursed Castle wing. These involve finding Artist’s Touch in Gallery of Curios and using it to activate the Rain Totems in Sinking Courtyard. Once you’ve collected the Carafe of Salt Water, you can return to Haunted Undercroft and summon the Stewmaster.
ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle Solution
The secret is activated at the large cauldron in the centre of Haunted Undercroft. You’ll need the Carafe of Salt Water before the hidden interaction becomes available.

To complete the puzzle, follow these steps:
- Obtain the Carafe of Salt Water from Sinking Courtyard.
- Enter Haunted Undercroft in the Cursed Castle wing.
- Find the large cauldron in the middle of the room.
- Interact with the cauldron and select the option to alter the stew.
- The Stewmaster will appear as a hidden boss encounter.
- Defeat the Stewmaster to receive Connoisseur’s Vision.
The ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle doesn’t require you to gather additional cooking ingredients or discover a recipe. The Carafe activates the cauldron, and defeating the summoned boss completes the secret.
If the cauldron has no available interaction, you’ll need to check whether you obtained the Carafe from Sinking Courtyard. Simply activating the Rain Totems won’t be enough.
ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle Prerequisites: How to Get the Carafe of Salt Water
The Carafe of Salt Water is obtained through a series of hidden interactions across Gallery of Curios and Sinking Courtyard. Both rooms belong to the Cursed Castle wing of the Nowhere Vault.
Step 1: Get Artist’s Touch in Gallery of Curios
Start by entering Gallery of Curios and searching the smaller rooms for the Destroyed Painting. Look for a purple glow that identifies the hidden objective.
Read the tablet associated with the painting, then search the nearby rubble to collect the Artist’s Lens.
With the Lens obtained, make your way towards the large southeastern gallery. Look for the telescope near the stairs that descend towards the crypt.
Interact with the telescope using the Artist’s Lens to receive Artist’s Touch.
This effect is essential for the ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle because it unlocks the Rain Totem interactions needed to obtain the Carafe of Salt Water.
Step 2: Activate the Sinking Courtyard Rain Totems
Once you have Artist’s Touch, enter Sinking Courtyard and locate the three Rain Totems scattered throughout the room.
Approach each totem and use the interaction made available by Artist’s Touch. All three need to be activated before you can collect the Carafe.
After activating the final Rain Totem, locate the Brackish Fountain. Interact with the fountain to receive the Carafe of Salt Water.
The fountain is an important final step. The Carafe isn’t automatically awarded when you activate the third Rain Totem.
You can now return to Haunted Undercroft and use the Carafe at the central cauldron.
How to Summon and Defeat the Stewmaster
The ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle ends with a secret combat encounter rather than another sequence of environmental interactions.
Once you’ve collected the Carafe of Salt Water, approach the cauldron in Haunted Undercroft and select the interaction to alter the stew.
This summons the Stewmaster, which you must defeat to complete the hidden objective.
There’s no separate ingredient combination to work out. Once the boss appears, concentrate on defeating it using your usual combat abilities while responding to its attacks.
After the Stewmaster is defeated, you’ll receive Connoisseur’s Vision. This effect is the reward needed to continue another secret elsewhere in the Nowhere Vault.
Make sure you’ve received Connoisseur’s Vision before leaving Haunted Undercroft, as it connects this puzzle to the Lunar Path wing.
ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle Reward: Where to Use Connoisseur’s Vision
Connoisseur’s Vision is required to complete a hidden interaction in The Lakehouse, located in the Lunar Path wing of the Nowhere Vault.
After defeating the Stewmaster, continue through the Vault until you encounter The Lakehouse with Connoisseur’s Vision available.
Inside the room, look for the secret interaction called Creative Transcendence. Using Connoisseur’s Vision allows you to complete this interaction and obtain the Timeward Seal.
The Timeward Seal is then used in the Sage’s Trove, where it contributes towards unlocking the wider Gryphon Seal objective.
Although the ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle takes place in Cursed Castle, its reward is used in Lunar Path. The Cursed Castle wing has a separate seal objective involving Subjugating Mindspore, which is obtained through the Fungal Chasm secret in Arcanum.
Completing all three wing-seal objectives contributes towards the Heir to the Sage’s Legacy achievement, which rewards the Ancient Direnni Quasigriff mount.
ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle Not Working: Possible Problems
If the ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle isn’t working, the problem may involve a missing prerequisite or an interaction that hasn’t activated correctly.
The cauldron cannot be interacted with
The most common thing to check is whether you’ve obtained the Carafe of Salt Water.
You’ll need to complete Gallery of Curios for Artist’s Touch, activate all three Rain Totems in Sinking Courtyard and collect the Carafe from the Brackish Fountain.
If you’ve only activated the totems without using the fountain, return to Sinking Courtyard when that room becomes available and complete the missing interaction.
One of the Rain Totems won’t activate
A player report on the official ESO forums describes a problem where two Rain Totems could be activated, but the third remained outlined in green despite the player having Artist’s Touch.
The player encountered the same problem after attempting the room again alone, suggesting that the issue wasn’t necessarily caused by group participation.
If you’ve confirmed Artist’s Touch is available and the third totem still refuses to activate, you may be encountering this reported bug rather than missing an additional puzzle step.
The Stewmaster doesn’t appear
If the cauldron interaction is unavailable, confirm that the Carafe has been obtained before assuming the boss encounter is broken.
The documented sequence for the ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle is to collect the Carafe, use it at the cauldron and defeat the summoned Stewmaster.
There are no additional cooking ingredients or hidden combinations required.
Haunted Undercroft hasn’t appeared in your run
Nowhere Vault challenge rooms are selected from randomized pools, meaning you won’t always encounter Gallery of Curios, Sinking Courtyard and Haunted Undercroft in the required order.
You may need further opportunities to encounter the correct rooms once you’ve obtained their prerequisites.
The same applies to The Lakehouse, where Connoisseur’s Vision is eventually used.
ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle and the Nowhere Vault Secret Route
The ESO Haunted Undercroft Puzzle is part of a larger set of interconnected secrets across the Nowhere Vault’s three wings.
Cursed Castle provides Connoisseur’s Vision for The Lakehouse in Lunar Path. Lunar Path provides Astralight Lumen for Custodian’s Repository in Arcanum, while Arcanum provides Subjugating Mindspore for Prison of the Unrepentant in Cursed Castle.
Each wing therefore contributes towards another wing’s final secret.
You don’t need to solve all three wings to summon the Stewmaster, but understanding these connections is useful if you’re working towards the Ancient Direnni Quasigriff mount.
