Into Rancor is Dragon’s Dogma 2: Dark Arisen’s final post-game story quest, beginning after Reunion and leading to the hidden realm of Niflhel. Even after the Fallen Dragon is defeated, the threat above Norgan hasn’t disappeared; Polyeidus believes its source lies beyond the ordinary world.
The tricky part is getting into Niflhel. You can’t travel there directly or simply attack the final boss. The Pathfinder first gives you an incomplete blade, and you have to gather rancorous souls from the new disturbances before it can open the way. Here is the confirmed quest order, along with what the available walkthrough evidence does and doesn’t pin down.
How to start Into Rancor after Reunion
Complete the main quest Reunion, then speak to Polyeidus. He explains that the new darkness and demon appearances match stories he’s read while deciphering ancient slabs. The investigation takes you to Abyss Ridge, the vantage point overlooking Niflhel.
Track Into Rancor in your quest journal and travel to Abyss Ridge. Interact with the Pathfinder when it appears. The conversation explains that the Fallen Dragon wasn’t the last enemy: the power responsible for the catastrophe is still active in Niflhel.
Talk to the Pathfinder and receive the soulless blade
During Into Rancor, the Pathfinder presents a soulless Godsbane blade. It isn’t ready to open the route yet, because it must be filled with rancorous souls. You should not mistake it for a standard equipment upgrade or sell off quest-related materials before the objective changes.

Find rancorous souls and complete the Blade of Rancor
After accepting the blade, search for the vortexes that have appeared across the land. Use the Eye of the Sphinx to identify the disturbances, then travel to each marked challenge and complete it to absorb the rancorous souls.
Your objective here is to charge the blade, not merely travel to Abyss Ridge a second time. Once the required souls have been absorbed, the soulless Godsbane becomes the Blade of Rancor. The exact challenge list and fixed number of vortexes aren’t consistently documented in the available published walkthroughs, so a fabricated map of those encounters would be misleading. Follow the Eye of the Sphinx markers and the quest journal’s updated completion state.
How to enter Niflhel
Return to Abyss Ridge with the completed Blade of Rancor and speak to the Pathfinder again. After the conversation, the quest asks you to brandish the blade above Niflhel. Use the prompted interaction with the sword; simply equipping it or looking down into the abyss isn’t the objective.
When the way opens, descend into the abyss to enter Niflhel’s depths. Make any final equipment or inventory preparations before taking the plunge, because the next section contains the expansion’s final encounter.

How to defeat Satanachia, the Thane of Darkness
Satanachia is the boss at the end of Into Rancor. Its name and location distinguish it from the Fallen Dragon encounter at the end of the main Forsaken Dominion storyline. Prepare for a prolonged fight with a party that can both heal and keep damage up.
- Restock curatives and revive supplies before entering Niflhel.
- Keep a Mage or another reliable healer in the party, especially if you rely on damage-focused pawns.
- Watch the whole arena rather than committing to a long animation when the boss starts a major attack.
- Revive fallen pawns when safe. Losing your support characters reduces damage and survival options for the remainder of the fight.
- Avoid exhausting your stamina by attacking nonstop; leave room to move out of incoming effects.
Published material establishes the boss identity and quest sequence, but doesn’t reliably establish a full list of Satanachia’s individual moves, elemental resistances or exact attack timings. Don’t rely on unverified ‘guaranteed safe spots’ or made-up weaknesses. The safest approach is to learn each visible telegraph and keep the party alive between openings.
What happens after Into Rancor?
Defeating Satanachia triggers the final cutscene and returns you to the ordinary game world, concluding the Dark Arisen quest. If you’re missing Into Rancor entirely, verify that Reunion has been completed before returning to Polyeidus. If the passage to Niflhel stays closed, check that you finished the vortex objectives and that the quest item is now the Blade of Rancor.
Into Rancor is the climax of the expansion’s second ending sequence. Its most important progression check is the blade’s transformation: without those gathered souls, the final route will remain inaccessible.
