Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics: How Activity and Reward Choices Work

Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics gives players a way to influence which activities and rewards appear when they build War Plans. Rather than simply accepting whatever the endgame board offers, the new system lets you spend points on the choices that suit what you want to play. Blizzard has outlined the changes for the Season 16 public test, which begins on 27 October 2026, but the final balance will depend on what happens during testing.

Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics is an appealing idea if you have a preferred endgame routine, particularly when you are chasing particular crafting materials or trying to avoid activities you rarely enjoy. There is an important limit to the promise, though: Blizzard describes increased chances, not guaranteed appearances. Understanding that distinction will help players test the system without assuming that one point has turned a random reward into a certainty.

What does Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics actually change?

War Plans Tactics is a new layer of progression attached to the existing War Plans system. You earn points by completing War Plans activities, then allocate them to influence which activity types or reward categories are offered. Blizzard says activity nodes accept up to three points each. Spending more on a preferred activity raises its relative likelihood, but the release notes do not publish exact selection percentages or a mathematical formula for each point.

That makes Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics different from simply unlocking a new area or completing a fixed quest. With Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics, you are adjusting future options, not choosing a permanent playlist where unwanted activities can never appear. If the interface shows changes to relative priority when the PTR opens, compare several War Plans before making strong claims about the results. A single favourable plan would not prove the weighting is working exactly as expected.

The new feature also sits alongside older mechanics rather than erasing them. If you have not yet reached the endgame board, our War Plans unlock guide and Command Table location guide cover those established steps. This page is about choosing priorities after you can already use the system, not a replacement for the unlock route.

How the activity points and reward nodes work

Blizzard specifies a maximum of three points for each activity node and three for each reward type. That is the hard limit currently confirmed for Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics. You do not need to assume that every reward group has an identical value per point, or that investing three points makes it the only reward you will ever see. The purpose is to nudge the pool toward your preferences.

Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics also brings an extra choice for certain endgame types. With at least one point assigned to Helltides or Nightmare Dungeons, the new options can favour Greater Helltides or Escalation Dungeons respectively. These unlocks are worth knowing about before you spend every available point elsewhere, particularly if higher-tier versions are what you want to examine during the PTR. Blizzard has not promised a fixed rate at which either variant will be generated.

The ten reward nodes are armour, weapons, jewellery, Obducite, salvage, gems, gold, activity keys, Horadric Cube materials and Talisman items. Points increase the chance of seeing each chosen reward type. A player interested in equipment might prioritise the first three, while somebody testing crafting could concentrate on Obducite or Cube materials. Those are examples of reasonable goals, not proven best builds or exact reward-rate recommendations.

The existing activity-type guide explains what is currently available, and the Activity Points guide covers the live progression rules. Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics adds a broader layer of preference to those systems. Keeping the distinction clear prevents players from following an old activity-tree explanation and mistakenly expecting it to describe the new meta-progression screen.

What are Marks of Wisdom used for?

Another important part of Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics is how you undo a decision. Blizzard says turning in completed War Plans awards Marks of Wisdom, a currency used to reassign points in both the Tactics tree and the individual activity trees. Previously those respecs used gold. Under the announced Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics rules, the new currency takes over that particular role, so decide which nodes you actually want before spending Marks of Wisdom.

Blizzard sets the Marks of Wisdom cap at 20 during the PTR. That number is explicitly a test-build limit, not a confirmed permanent storage cap for the live season. The testing vendor can also provide War Plans progression and Marks of Wisdom, allowing you to experiment without waiting for a normal character to accumulate everything. It is useful for comparisons, but a boosted test account does not establish the time required to earn those resources in regular play.

If you are familiar with levelling the Command Table or generating War Plans sigils, do not confuse either activity with the new respec cost. They are related pieces of War Plans progression, but Marks of Wisdom have the specific purpose Blizzard describes. Understanding which system a currency belongs to avoids wasting it while experimenting.

Is Tactics seasonal only, and what should you test?

Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics is planned for both the Seasonal and Eternal realms. That is different from Tyrael’s Boons, the Season 16 themed War Plans tree that Blizzard says will be accessible to Seasonal players. If you are comparing two characters across realms, check which interface you are using before assuming a missing seasonal choice means Tactics itself has disappeared.

To judge Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics fairly, choose one activity or reward goal, record your point allocation, then observe a number of offered plans. Change only one priority for a comparison, using Marks of Wisdom where needed. Avoid presenting a tiny sample as a guaranteed strategy, and note the PTR version if a later patch changes what you see. For party play, our shared War Plans guide explains how the existing multiplayer foundation works, though the effect of new priorities in every party situation still needs hands-on testing.

For Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics, Blizzard confirms a three-point cap per node, ten reward categories, Marks of Wisdom for reallocating points and access in both Seasonal and Eternal realms. Run multiple plans to see how each chosen priority changes the offers.

For most players, the attraction of Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics is straightforward: more say over the activities they run and the things they hope to earn. Use the test week to find out whether the choices genuinely suit your goals, without treating unknown percentages as established facts. Start with the activities you actually enjoy rather than treating one untested node as mandatory.

Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics: PTR known issues

The Diablo 4 War Plans Tactics features are being tested in the 3.3.0 PTR, and Blizzard has confirmed two problems that can make the choices confusing. First, the Lair of Runes node currently does not increase rune drops from Lair Bosses. Investing points in that option during the test won’t produce the advertised boost. Blizzard has not listed a player-side fix.

If a matching alt shows no shared reputation points, change zones and reopen War Plans. See our War Plans points missing guide for the sharing requirements. This is a known PTR issue, not evidence your reputation was permanently wiped. Shared points still require matching Seasonal/Eternal, Hardcore and Solo Self-Found account partitions. Individual characters keep separate planners and can allocate points differently.

The Merchant of Mystery may also appear below Torment difficulty in the PTR even though Blizzard describes the merchant as a Torment feature of Tyrael’s Boons. Treat that early appearance as a bug, not a new unlock requirement. The Diablo 4 PTR known-issues guide lists the other confirmed test bugs. For a fresh character and Mrak’s boosts, see PTR Build Testing.
