Atelier Karia body shape changes will be an optional feature in Gust’s upcoming alchemy RPG. Eating snacks can change the protagonist’s appearance, but players can turn the effect off or lock Karia at their favourite body shape while continuing to use the game’s food systems. The developer announced the decision after receiving more than 38,000 survey responses.
It isn’t a playable feature yet. Atelier Karia: The Night Kingdom & the Guide of Memories launches February 25, 2027 on PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Alongside the shape options, Gust confirmed that survey-selected costumes and a special short story are being prepared.
How Atelier Karia body shape changes work
With body shape changes switched ON, Karia’s appearance responds to how much she eats during snack breaks. With the setting OFF, eating doesn’t change her body shape. Players who enjoy one particular appearance can also lock that shape so future meals don’t change it.
The options concern appearance, not a ban on eating food. Karia can still eat ingredients, synthesize items and use the separate systems that give her new abilities. Gust hasn’t confirmed an exact settings-screen layout, specific food thresholds or a numerical shape slider.

Atelier Karia body shape changes: All three options
| Player choice | Result |
|---|---|
| Body shape changes ON | Eating snacks can change Karia’s appearance |
| Body shape changes OFF | Karia’s appearance stays unchanged by eating |
| Lock your preferred body shape | Choose a shape to keep while eating continues |
These Atelier Karia body shape changes settings are planned for release, but no one can confirm the final menu buttons through gameplay yet. They’re designed to let players enjoy the same RPG without being forced into changing Karia’s appearance.
Why did Gust confirm Atelier Karia body shape changes?
Players were invited to take part in a survey over the summer. More than 38,000 responses were submitted, and 78.9% of respondents favoured a body-shape feature. Another 9.7% opposed it and 11.4% had no preference. Support differed by language, reaching 90.79% among English responses and 74.61% among Japanese responses.
Gust also asked what type of control players wanted. A larger group preferred the option to lock a shape: 62.76%, compared with 31.60% who preferred ongoing changes based on food consumed and 5.64% with no preference. That distinction influenced how the optional system will work.

Are Atelier Karia body shape changes linked to combat stats?
The developer hasn’t said Karia’s appearance affects health, speed or attack strength. The food system separately offers skills and style changes, so those shouldn’t be mistaken for weight-related bonuses. Players can leave body shape changes off while continuing to eat items to support combat and exploration.
Atelier Karia’s synthesis system lets you combine ingredients to create useful items. Karia can eat both ingredients and certain synthesized items, opening routes and helping unlock new abilities. The new appearance option is designed to fit around those established mechanics.
What costumes were chosen in the survey?
Gust’s results place Dark Girly first with 16,771 votes, Gothic Lolita second with 15,665 and Visual Kei-inspired styling third with 13,138. The company says survey-selected outfits will be added, but their completed in-game versions and availability details haven’t been announced.
A special short story will also be written around the survey’s chosen theme, while developers plan to respond to the three most popular player questions through the official Atelier social channels. Those plans are distinct from the Atelier Karia body shape changes feature.

When will Atelier Karia body shape changes be playable?
Atelier Karia is scheduled for February 25, 2027, across Switch 2, PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC. Gust has not specified an earlier demo or separate date for the appearance option. Until the finished game is available, the exact controls and any additional restrictions remain unconfirmed.
