ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare is one of the most obvious endgame targets in the Aircraft Tree, yet it is also one of the easiest nodes to misunderstand when the aircraft does not appear just because your MRP balance is high. The superplane has more than one condition attached to its availability, and those conditions are not equally visible while you are still moving through the normal branches. That makes it worth planning for before you reach the point where you expect to buy it.
Its value is not only about rarity either. The Nightmare carries an experimental weapon set that changes how it approaches mixed-target Free Missions, S-rank cleanup and high-value threats compared with a conventional late-tree Fighter. Before deciding whether to save for it, you need the exact unlock chain, total purchase requirement and what the aircraft actually gives you after it enters the hangar. The first section starts with that verified live unlock route.
ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare: exact unlock requirements

ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare unlocks on the Campaign Aircraft Tree after you complete Mission 30 and finish the campaign. The aircraft costs 1,000,000 MRP. Its post-game node also requires you to own at least one of the late-tree aircraft that lead into the unlock, with the F-22A Raptor, F-35C Lightning II or Su-57 Felon serving as the qualifying route. ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare does not replace every specialist aircraft, but it removes a great deal of loadout friction during post-game cleanup.
That means there are two separate checks: campaign completion and Aircraft Tree ownership. If the X-40 node is still unavailable after the credits, open the tree and confirm you have actually purchased one of those 550,000 MRP late-game aircraft rather than merely revealing it on the map. Then make sure you still have enough MRP for the one-million purchase itself. ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare is a post-campaign investment, so keeping MRP in reserve before Mission 30 can shorten the wait once it appears.
Best route to prepare before the credits
The cleanest preparation is to choose the F-22A, F-35C or Su-57 as your normal late-campaign destination instead of buying unrelated branches. All three are powerful enough to justify the spend on their own, so the prerequisite does not have to feel like a tax. The F-35C is especially convenient for players who like carrier-capable Multiroles, while the Raptor and Felon suit a more air-superiority focused campaign. ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare is easiest to prepare for by owning one of the qualifying late-tree aircraft before the final mission is cleared.
Do not hoard every point waiting for ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare. You still need useful aircraft, weapons and parts to finish the story, and the Nightmare cannot be bought before the campaign clear anyway. Spend enough to keep the current route strong, then use post-game Free Mission and MRP farming to close the final gap.
X-40 weapons and why it is strong
The X-40 carries standard missiles plus three special-weapon options: UAVT, EMLB and QAAM. UAVT is the signature tool because it can contribute against both airborne and surface targets, making the aircraft unusually flexible during mixed missions. EMLB gives the plane a powerful experimental long-range option, while QAAM provides a familiar high-tracking answer to agile aircraft and named Aces. ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare is especially useful in mixed Free Missions because UAVT can contribute against both airborne and surface targets.
The trade-off is ammunition. ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare can erase valuable targets very quickly, but its exotic weapons are not an excuse to fire at every low-value unit on the radar. On dense ground missions, a dedicated area weapon can still outperform the precision-focused experimental loadout, so keep another strike aircraft available for the sorties that reward splash damage.

Best uses after unlocking the Nightmare
Free Mission is where the purchase immediately pays back. The X-40 is excellent for S-rank cleanup because it combines high aircraft performance with weapons that cover more than one target type. It is also a strong choice for Assault Record cleanup when a mission contains a difficult conditional Ace after a long mixed objective, because you can carry a loadout capable of handling both the route and the named target. ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare is expensive enough that players focused on one specialist role may still prefer finishing another branch first.
For MRP farming, the aircraft is useful but not mandatory. Mission 28 and other dense sorties can already pay well with cheaper jets. Buy ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare because you want the post-game performance and flexibility, not because the one-million purchase somehow creates a unique currency multiplier.
X-40 not appearing after Mission 30
If the node is missing, first confirm the campaign clear has actually saved after the credits. Next check that one of the required late-tree aircraft is owned, not just reachable. Finally, trace the Aircraft Tree connection and buy any prerequisite nodes that still separate your branch from the X-40. Having 1,000,000 MRP by itself does not bypass the tree. ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare troubleshooting should begin with campaign completion, the qualifying aircraft prerequisite and the full MRP balance.
Campaign and ACE COMBAT ONLINE progression are also separate. Unlocking a powerful aircraft online does not purchase ACE COMBAT 8 X-40 Nightmare in Campaign, and Campaign MRP cannot be replaced with online currency. The post-game superplane must be unlocked through the Campaign Aircraft Tree on the save where Mission 30 was completed.
