Cairn Beginners Guide: the quickest way to stop falling is to get your feet under you before reaching for the next hold. Aava can scale almost any rock, but poor balance drains stamina and makes a slip more likely.
Tenzen teaches the basics before the expedition up Mount Kami, where hunger, thirst, weather and equipment management become part of the challenge. These are the skills worth learning before starting your first long ascent.
Cairn Beginners Guide: Learn the Tenzen Climbing Basics

Practise moving one hand or foot at a time, then watch the character’s posture. A small foot adjustment can make a high reach much easier. Try climbing the same short section from different holds rather than assuming there is only one possible route.
The game models balance and effort, not just button timing. Hanging entirely from your arms is tiring, while good footholds let your legs support more weight. When a movement feels unstable, pause and look for a better body position.
Watch Aava’s Breathing and Stamina
Aava breathes harder as she tires, her limbs shake and the camera closes in. Those are warnings that the current pose is demanding. Don’t force another reach unless you can keep your balance afterwards.
The Cairn Beginners Guide approach is to find your next stable position before moving. A slightly longer line with good footholds can cost much less energy than a direct scramble up an overhang.
Cairn Beginners Guide: Pitons and the Climbot
Pitons are anchors that protect your rope. Place them before an exposed or difficult part of a wall, not automatically after every easy movement. Pay attention to how far you’ve climbed from your last secure anchor.
The Climbot helps with equipment management. At a bivouac it can combine two piton scraps into a functional piton, making damaged equipment useful again. Practise rappelling at safe heights before relying on the rope during a difficult descent.
Use Bivouacs for Food and Rest

Bivouacs allow you to sleep, cook, inspect your fingers and repair equipment. Rest restores health, but hunger and thirst can continue falling. Check drinking water and food before taking a long break.
Cook after sleeping if you want timed food effects for the next climbing section. Also check your inventory: bring the right protection, chalk and finger tape, but leave enough room for supplies found along the way.
Cairn Beginners Guide: Difficulty and Assist Mode
The Game Bakers offers Explorer, Alpinist and Free Solo. Explorer and Alpinist support assists such as Fall Rewind, infinite pitons, chalk and tape, saving on solid ground and an option that removes hunger, thirst and cold.
Fall Rewind is useful when practising a difficult move because you can retry from before the mistake. You can also remap controls, highlight limbs and skip the piton timing minigame if that makes climbing easier.
Plan Each Route with Remote View
Remote View lets you inspect the wall before committing. Look for resting ledges, safe footholds and where you might need a piton. The shortest-looking route may not be the easiest if it forces several exhausting stretches.
Cairn Beginners Guide preparation also means checking the conditions around Mount Kami. Save at bivouacs, keep food and water available, and don’t spend every piton before an exposed stretch.
Before You Leave Tenzen
Finish the training walls and try the advanced gym problems if you want the Serious training achievement. Learn to climb down as well as up, and check your equipment before leaving for the main mountain.
After you’ve learned the basics, the October 29 Free Roam update lets you revisit Kami while Deep Water adds Haken, Ruka and Lamu. This Cairn Beginners Guide covers the skills you’ll use on both the original mountain and the new short climbs.
