Minecraft Freezing Effect is the new cold-damage status added in Minecraft’s fourth 2026 game-drop tests. It reduces movement and jumping, eventually deals damage and can be prevented from building up with leather armour. This guide explains how to work with the feature in the October snapshots and Bedrock previews.
These additions are still being tested, so the current Java and Bedrock mechanics may change before the stable release. Use the appropriate snapshot or preview and a backup world when trying new blocks, recipes or survival interactions. The key is knowing which rules Mojang has confirmed and which exact numbers have not been published yet.
Minecraft Freezing Effect: What the Freezing Effect does
The Minecraft Freezing Effect is a status effect introduced in the fourth 2026 game drop tests. It makes the player shake, reduces jump height and eventually causes damage as freezing builds up. This differs from merely standing in a cold biome: the new Frostbite mob applies Freezing through melee attacks. Its ranged Ice Balls are another threat, dealing impact damage and knockback. How leather armour protects you
Wearing at least one leather armour piece protects you against freezing buildup and damage. The Minecraft Freezing Effect can still be applied and its icon can remain visible, so an icon alone doesn’t mean the protection has failed. Put leather on before fighting Frostbites in an Ice Cave.
How to get Freezing potions
You can brew a Potion of Freezing by adding an Ice Ball to an Awkward Potion in a Brewing Stand. Ice Balls come from Frostbites. From there, use the normal potion-making methods for Splash and Lingering Potions of Freezing. This recipe is documented for the current Java snapshot; confirm it in your Bedrock preview because test-build parity may differ.
Freezing arrows in Java and Bedrock
Freezing tipped arrows are edition-specific. In Bedrock, arrows can be dipped in a cauldron holding a Potion of Freezing. In Java, combine a Lingering Potion of Freezing with eight arrows in the crafting grid. Don’t use the Bedrock cauldron method in Java.
Which mobs are immune?
Frostbites are immune to the Minecraft Freezing Effect and do not suffer freezing movement penalties from Powder Snow. Java Snapshot 26.4 Snapshot 4 made Zombies, Drowned and Husks immune to freezing damage. Later Bedrock previews extend protection to some cold-adapted mobs, including Strays, Polar Bears and Snow Golems. The initial Bedrock notes describe five times the damage against susceptible mobs while frozen. Mob immunities and damage scaling are still under test, so don’t rely on one edition’s list for a farm built in the other.
Freezing versus Frost Walker
The Minecraft Freezing Effect should not be confused with Frost Walker. Frost Walker is a boot enchantment that temporarily turns nearby water to ice; it does not remove the new status effect. Leather armour is the documented defence against the freezing buildup. Likewise, Brittle Ice creates a falling hazard, not the same status mechanic. Frostbites can cross that block without breaking it, so don’t use it as a trap for them.
Troubleshooting Java and Bedrock
If Minecraft Freezing Effect potions, Frostbites or Ice Balls aren’t showing up, check your game version: the new winter content belongs to Java 26.4 snapshots and Bedrock 26.70 previews, not the stable release as of October 25. Enable experimental content where Bedrock requires it. If your Freezing icon stays visible after equipping leather, that is expected: leather prevents becoming frozen without blocking or curing the status. Back away from enemies and get onto solid ground while managing the threat.
