Final Fantasy Resonance Demo is available now, giving players the entire opening chapter of Square Enix’s HD-2D RPG before the full game arrives on October 22, 2026. The free trial is available across PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch 2 and PC, and your progress can carry into the full release.
There’s quite a bit to try for something that doesn’t cost a penny. Square Enix estimates around three to five hours for the opening chapter, including a chance to get comfortable with its turn-based battles and Vision system. If you’re wondering where to download it, how much you can play or whether you’ll have to start over later, here’s what the publisher has actually confirmed.
Where to download Final Fantasy Resonance Demo
The Final Fantasy Resonance Demo launched in September 2026, following its reveal during Sony’s September 3 State of Play. Square Enix’s September 9 announcement confirmed availability on all six supported platform versions. You can download it free from the digital storefront associated with your console or PC.
On PS5, search the PlayStation Store for FINAL FANTASY RESONANCE DEMO and select Add to Library. On Xbox, the demo has its own free Microsoft Store listing. On Steam, Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2, find the game’s official store listing and look for the demo option. You don’t need to buy an edition or place a preorder first.
If you see a price on the main game listing, check that you’ve selected the demo rather than the full release. The demo is free, while the October 22 launch game is a separate purchase. The store layout varies from platform to platform, so the demo may appear as another edition or a separate download.
Final Fantasy Resonance Demo platforms: PS5, Xbox, Switch and PC
Square Enix confirms demo versions for PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X|S, Steam on PC and Xbox on PC. It’s not limited to PlayStation, even though the original announcement appeared during a Sony presentation. Xbox’s official listing also identifies its demo as an Xbox Play Anywhere title.
The confirmed platform list does not include PS4 or Xbox One. If you’re planning to buy the full game somewhere different from where you try the demo, remember that a shared release across platforms doesn’t automatically mean your saved data can move between their stores.
How long is Final Fantasy Resonance Demo?
The publisher estimates three to five hours of gameplay, covering the story’s opening through the end of Chapter 1. Your time will depend on how much you explore, how long you spend experimenting with party abilities and whether you take your time during battles.
It’s a substantial chunk of the beginning, not a timed 30-minute trial. The PlayStation Store does note that some level restrictions apply, but says the full first chapter can be explored as it appears in the release version. The demo isn’t a promise that every later area, summon or classic hero will be available straight away.
What can you do in the Final Fantasy Resonance Demo?

Chapter 1 introduces the Kingdom of Grandshelt and sets up the adventure with Rain and his companions. You can get a feel for the game’s exploration and evolved turn-based combat rather than relying on trailers to judge how it plays.
Its combat uses a timeline that shows the order in which allies and enemies are due to act. Enemies also have a stagger gauge beneath their health bar. Emptying it staggers them, interrupts their turn and lowers their defence, which gives you an opening to push the advantage.
Visions are another major part of the system. They let characters access abilities linked to people they encounter during the adventure. The full game also features classic Final Fantasy heroes, Espers and Resonance attacks, but their complete unlock routes shouldn’t be treated as Chapter 1 content unless they’re actually available in the demo.
Does Final Fantasy Resonance Demo progress carry over?
Yes. Square Enix explicitly confirms that save data from the Final Fantasy Resonance Demo can be carried into the full game when it launches on October 22. That means time spent on the opening chapter isn’t automatically wasted, and you shouldn’t have to replay the entire beginning just to continue your adventure.
The publisher’s general announcement does not promise that a save from one storefront or console family will transfer to a completely different one. If keeping your progress is important, the best plan is to play the demo and buy the full release on the same platform and account. Don’t assume, for instance, that a Switch save can be imported into a Steam copy.
How to transfer a Final Fantasy Resonance Demo save
Finish as much of Chapter 1 as you like and let the demo save your progress. Leave the saved data in place on your console or PC. When the full version launches, install it on the account and platform you used for the demo, then follow the game’s prompts for continuing from your existing save.
Square Enix has confirmed that a transfer is supported, but hasn’t provided a single button-by-button import sequence that applies to all the different versions. Avoid deleting the demo’s saved data while tidying up storage before launch. If the full game doesn’t recognise your progress on October 22, check the version, account and any in-game save-import options before starting a fresh file over it.
Final Fantasy Resonance Demo combat and Visions

If you haven’t played a turn-based Final Fantasy for a while, keep an eye on the action order instead of picking attacks without looking. Staggering an enemy at the right moment can stop its next action and make follow-up damage more effective. It’s worth trying different abilities to see how they work together before the tougher encounters in the full game.
Square Enix says you learn new abilities by equipping Visions and winning battles. Once learned, an ability can be equipped even when a different Vision is active, provided it fits within your available cost limit. The Final Fantasy Resonance Visions guide explores that system, while the Resonance Attacks guide covers the more powerful techniques revealed ahead of launch.
Can you fight Sephiroth in the Final Fantasy Resonance Demo?
Sephiroth’s appearance was revealed in the same presentation as the demo, but that doesn’t mean his optional encounter is included in Chapter 1. Square Enix confirms that players will be able to find and challenge him for a special reward in the game, without establishing that the fight is accessible during the trial.
If you’re picking up the demo solely to chase Sephiroth, don’t assume he’s waiting at the end of the opening chapter. The safe expectation is the story content and combat systems that Square Enix has specifically advertised for the demo.
When does the full Final Fantasy Resonance game release?
The full game is scheduled for October 22, 2026 across its announced platforms. The demo remains a way to get a head start before then, with save carry-over confirmed. Steam’s timing may appear as October 23 in some Japanese announcements, so use the release countdown shown by your own store if you plan to start immediately at launch.
You can buy the standard or one of the upgraded editions, but preordering isn’t necessary to play the free trial. If you’re deciding between versions, check the separate Final Fantasy Resonance Editions guide rather than expecting the demo to include Digital Deluxe or preorder bonuses.
