Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade is out now for Metro 2033 Redux and Metro: Last Light Redux. The Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade arrived on October 29, 2026, with higher-resolution textures, improved lighting, Xbox Play Anywhere, spatial audio and Impulse Triggers. A key part of the Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade is the distinction between the two Xbox console models. The published patch notes associate upscaled 4K at 120 FPS with Series X; they do not list an equivalent Series S 120 FPS mode. Here’s how to access the new release and what actually changes on each system.
Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade: How to download the free update
To install the Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade, open My games & apps on your Series X or Series S, locate Metro 2033 Redux or Metro: Last Light Redux in your library and open the title’s updates or store listing. If your owned edition qualifies for the free next-generation entitlement, install the available native Xbox Series release. You can also find the updated games through the Microsoft Store on the console.
The Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade is free to most owners of the existing Redux games. PLAION warns that some editions are not compatible with the offer, which means owning an older bundle or disc is not proof of eligibility by itself. Look at the platform entitlement for your copy before assuming the new licence appears automatically.
4K 60 FPS and Xbox Series X 120 FPS
The Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade lists true 4K at 60 FPS among the Xbox Series platform features, together with upscaled 4K at 120 FPS on Series X. These are performance targets from the official platform notes, not a claim that every scene will deliver an identical measured frame rate.
To view 120 FPS, connect Series X to a display supporting 120 Hz, then enable the supported refresh rate in Xbox display settings and choose the matching in-game performance option if shown. A standard 60 Hz television cannot display 120 distinct frames per second. Series S is supported as a native platform, but the published 120 FPS specification is specifically labelled Series X.
What 4A TSR changes on Xbox
The update introduces 4A TSR upscaling and anti-aliasing. It builds a sharper upscaled image from the game’s rendered frames, helping balance clarity and speed in the performance presentation. Higher-detail textures, refined geometry, improved shadows and screen-space global illumination also make the tunnels, outdoor scenes and character details look richer.
Other visual changes include runtime geometry tessellation and displacement, physically based materials, better particles, post-processing, animation quality and lighting. The Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade keeps the original campaign structure and gameplay intact rather than moving everything to the current-generation 4A engine.
Spatial Audio, Impulse Triggers and handheld support
With the Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade, Xbox Spatial Audio improves directional sound where your audio setup supports it. Impulse Triggers add extra feedback through compatible Xbox controllers, so actions feel different from the earlier backward-compatible versions. The audio, animation and controller changes work alongside the improved image presentation.
The official Xbox update also adds optimisations for Xbox Ally and Ally X, plus a power-optimised mode. These are part of the wider Xbox ecosystem update, not new missions or expansions for Metro 2033 or Last Light.
Xbox Play Anywhere and cross-platform ownership
Xbox Play Anywhere support lets qualifying digital ownership work across Xbox consoles and the Windows Microsoft Store ecosystem. Sign in with the Microsoft account that holds the entitlement and use the relevant Xbox or Windows Store library to access the supported version. This is separate from Steam, Epic Games Store and GOG purchases.
The Xbox Play Anywhere label is not a guarantee that every legacy Xbox One disc, older edition or save file will migrate into the new release. The publisher separately says most owners receive the free update, while some editions are excluded. Game Pass access and purchases made outside Microsoft’s ecosystem should be checked against their own store entitlements.
Quick Resume and save fixes
The Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade fixes black screens after waking an Xbox Series console, instability after Quick Resume, and graphical problems following suspended sessions. Xbox cloud-save syncing has been improved, together with checkpoints, autosaving and recovery after crashes. The fixes target problems in the updated release; they do not claim to restore previously damaged progress.
A separate warning applies to the Windows Microsoft Store update: older saves do not transfer to the new PC build. That does not establish the same rule for every Xbox One or Xbox Series save. If you use the Windows Store version, Chapter Select is unlocked for all chapters with default equipment, rather than a transferred inventory.
Other Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade fixes
The Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade also addresses gas-mask reload problems, enemies detecting players through walls, loading freezes and checkpoints created when too little filter time remains. Metro 2033 Redux fixes the Outpost Demon, Khan, Library, D6 and Armorer progression issues. Last Light Redux fixes the Garden bear boss, Revolution takedowns, Venice RPK crash, Khan DLC and Nightfall out-of-bounds issue.
For players reinstalling either game, the Metro Redux Xbox Series Upgrade brings a native Xbox version with meaningful control, audio and visual enhancements rather than simply unlocking an old backward-compatible frame-rate setting. The update does not add ray tracing or a remake of the campaigns.
