Core Keeper Hookshot: How to Get and Use It – Complete Guide

Core Keeper Hookshot

Core Keeper Hookshot is a new off-hand traversal item added in the 1.3 Riders of the Underground update, giving you a much faster way to cross pits and water when there is a solid surface to latch onto. It works more like a grappling tool than a free-swinging rope: equip it, aim at valid terrain on the far side of a gap, and use the off-hand action to pull yourself toward that point.

The important part is that the Core Keeper Hookshot is not a workbench recipe. Current 1.3 item data lists it as loot from several early and mid-game sources, including Forgotten Ruins fishing, ancient containers and Malugaz the Corrupted. That means you may already be able to pick one up in an established world without building a new crafting station.

The Core Keeper Hookshot is a rare off-hand item rather than a crafted tool. Current live item data lists several ways to obtain it, so you are not locked to one boss or one biome. The most useful sources are:

  • Fishing for loot in normal water in The Forgotten Ruins.
  • Breaking Ancient Crates and Large Ancient Crates.
  • Breaking Stoneware Pots and Large Stoneware Pots.
  • Defeating Malugaz the Corrupted, who can also drop the Hookshot.
  • Looting certain Clay Caves puzzle and mural scenes where it can appear in containers.

If you are specifically farming a Core Keeper Hookshot, Forgotten Ruins exploration makes sense because it gives you several chances at the same time. You can fish the biome’s normal water, smash ancient containers as you move through ruins and check generated puzzle rooms rather than repeatedly doing one activity.

How to use the Core Keeper Hookshot

Put the Core Keeper Hookshot in your off-hand slot, then face a solid wall or another valid piece of terrain across the gap you want to cross. Use your off-hand action while the target is in range. The Hookshot latches onto the surface and pulls your character toward it, letting you clear pits or water without laying a bridge first.

Pugstorm describes the item as a quick way to leap across small chasms, and that is the right way to think about it. You still need something solid to attach to, so the Core Keeper Hookshot will not let you fly freely across a completely open cavern. If there is no valid wall or surface within range, you will still need to build a bridge, go around or use another movement tool.

How far can the Hookshot reach?

The standard Core Keeper Hookshot has a listed pull range of 700. The upgraded Gilded Hookshot extends that listed reach to 1000, which makes it better for wider gaps and awkward exploration routes.

The regular version also carries a mining-damage bonus that scales with item level. The Gilded version instead adds melee and ranged damage alongside its longer grapple range, so it is more than a cosmetic upgrade if you keep a Hookshot equipped while exploring.

How to get the Gilded Hookshot

The Gilded Hookshot is the rarer version introduced alongside the Core Keeper Hookshot in 1.3. Current live loot data lists it as a drop from Omoroth the Sea Titan. It has the longer grapple range, so players who use the regular Hookshot constantly have a clear upgrade to chase once they are comfortable fighting Omoroth.

You do not need the Gilded version to use the new traversal mechanic. The ordinary Core Keeper Hookshot already gives you the core function and is available from much broader loot sources, making it the sensible first target for most worlds.

Does the Hookshot replace bridges?

No. The Core Keeper Hookshot is brilliant for moving quickly across short gaps, but it only works when there is valid terrain to grab. Bridges are still useful for permanent routes, carrying other players through an area, moving livestock and vehicles, or crossing spaces where there is nothing suitable for the Hookshot to latch onto.

What it really changes is exploration speed. Small pits and strips of water no longer have to interrupt every mining run, and that fits the wider Riders of the Underground update, which is heavily focused on faster movement through old and new parts of the world.

Core Keeper Hookshot not working?

If the Core Keeper Hookshot will not pull you across a gap, check the simple things first: make sure it is equipped in the off-hand slot, aim at a solid surface rather than the empty space above the pit, and move closer if the target is outside its range. The tool needs a valid anchor point. It is not a swing-anywhere grappling hook.

Also make sure your game is actually on version 1.3 or later. The Hookshot did not exist before Riders of the Underground, so an older client or a server that has not updated yet will not have the new item type or its traversal behaviour.

Pugstorm’s official Core Keeper update notes confirm that Hookshots are part of Riders of the Underground and are designed to pull players across pits and water by attaching to solid surfaces.
