Fallout 76 PS5 upgrade not free is the confusing Store situation some PlayStation Plus Essential players are seeing after the native PS5 version launched. Bethesda has now clarified the entitlement: players who access Fallout 76 through the old PlayStation Plus Essential claim will be able to download the native PS5 version for free on Friday, September 25 at 10 AM ET. If that is your only ownership route, September 21 is too early.
That does not mean every player has to wait. Bethesda says digital owners, physical-disc owners, and players accessing Fallout 76 through the PlayStation Plus Extra or Premium Game Catalog can download the PS5 version directly from the Store at no additional charge, subject to the normal ownership rules. The Essential case is the unusual one.

The main reason Fallout 76 PS5 upgrade not free searches are messy is that several different Store entitlements all lead to the same product page. Two players can stand on the same PS5 menu and see different buttons because one owns the game, one is using Extra, and another originally claimed the PS4 version through Essential.
Do not buy the game again just to make the button disappear
If PlayStation Plus Essential is your only route and the Store is asking for money before September 25, waiting is the cleanest option. Bethesda has already published a date for the free native entitlement. Buying another copy now would solve a different problem by creating a new ownership entitlement, but it is not necessary if you are happy to wait for the Essential rollout.
What if you purchased Fallout 76 and it still shows a price?
That is not the expected Fallout 76 PS5 upgrade not free situation for a normal digital owner. Make sure you are signed into the account that purchased Fallout 76, open the game’s Store page and check the version selector. If the entitlement still is not recognised, restore licences under Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Restore Licenses, restart the PS5 and check again.
For disc owners, keep the disc ownership route in mind. A physical licence and a digital Store licence are not the same thing. Do not assume that because the PS4 application was already installed digitally on the console, the PS5 Store will ignore how the original game was owned.
Why the native PS5 version is a separate download
Bethesda requires a full redownload for the native current-generation build. This is not a small patch that converts the PS4 application in place. Open the PlayStation Store, select the PS5 version and download the complete client when your entitlement becomes available.
The native release targets 60 FPS on PS5, adds VRR support on compatible displays and gives Bethesda a separate current-generation client to tune going forward. Standard PS5 is listed at 1440p, while PS5 Pro is one of the platforms Bethesda lists for 4K output on compatible displays.
What if the Store says you own it but the game gives a licence error?
That is no longer the same Fallout 76 PS5 upgrade not free problem. If the PS5 client has downloaded and then Fallout 76 says you do not have the licence to launch it, use the licence-error fixes: sign in with the owning account, restore the Fallout 76 licence and check Console Sharing and Offline Play if relevant.
Bethesda’s official native-version download page contains the September 25 Essential update and the current access rules. If Bethesda changes the date or Sony changes how the entitlement is surfaced in the Store, that page is the one to trust over launch-day screenshots.
