Fallout 76 PS5 vs PS4: What’s Different?

Fallout 76 PS5 vs PS4 is finally a proper native-generation comparison rather than “PS4 game running on newer hardware.” The Slasher update introduced a native PlayStation 5 version of Fallout 76, with Bethesda targeting 60 FPS, adding VRR support and giving current-generation hardware its own version for future platform-specific tuning.

If you are deciding whether to switch clients, the biggest differences are performance and the native build itself. The PS5 version must be downloaded separately from the PlayStation Store, which is why our PS5 upgrade guide is worth checking before you delete the older application.

Fallout 76 PS5 vs PS4 performance

In Fallout 76 PS5 vs PS4, the headline upgrade is the frame-rate target. Bethesda lists the native PS5 version at a targeted 60 FPS. The standard PS4 is part of the previous-generation group and does not receive that same native Gen 9 target.

Bethesda also describes the new PS5 and Xbox Series versions as more performant and stable. That does not mean every heavy event will become perfectly locked under every possible network or combat condition, but the current-generation client is now the version Bethesda can optimize directly for PS5 hardware.

Resolution differences

Fallout 76 PS5 vs PS4 also changes the resolution target. Bethesda lists standard PS5 at 1440p, while previous-generation platforms continue to support 1080p. PS4 Pro is a special case because Bethesda lists PS4 Pro at 1440p too, so the biggest standard PS4-to-PS5 jump is not just raw resolution.

If you own a PS5 Pro, Bethesda lists that machine among the platforms supporting 4K on compatible displays. Standard PS5 is not included in the 4K list in the live Slasher release notes, so it is better to describe it accurately as 1440p rather than casually calling the PS5 version “4K.”

PS5 adds VRR support

Another difference in Fallout 76 PS5 vs PS4 is variable refresh rate support. Bethesda lists VRR on compatible displays for PS5 and PS5 Pro, capped to 60 FPS. That can make variations around the target feel smoother on a television or monitor that supports VRR.

Base PS4 is not listed for VRR. That makes the PS5 client a better fit for modern displays, particularly if you are sensitive to frame pacing or play large public events where performance can fluctuate.

Visual and stability improvements

Bethesda’s current-generation testing also highlighted improved draw distances and shadows, giving Fallout 76 PS5 vs PS4 more than a frame-rate difference. The studio says the native versions improve performance and stability while also allowing the team to tune Gen 9 and Gen 8 hardware separately in future.

That last part matters long term. Before this release, PS5 owners were essentially relying on the older console version through compatibility. A native PS5 application gives Bethesda a cleaner path for fixes and platform-specific improvements without treating every PlayStation console as one target.

The upgrade requires a full download

There is one less glamorous difference in Fallout 76 PS5 vs PS4: the native PS5 version is a separate full download. Bethesda says you must redownload the entire game from the PlayStation Store to access it. Installing the latest PS4 patch alone does not silently convert the application into the PS5 build.

The September update is unusually large across every platform because Bethesda also repackaged the game files to reduce the final installation footprint. If your internet connection is slow, plan around the download rather than expecting a quick version switch.

Should PS4 players expect the game to stop working?

No. Fallout 76 PS5 vs PS4 is not a story of Bethesda dropping older hardware on September 15. The studio specifically says the Gen 9 work also benefits older consoles through better performance, stability and visual fidelity, and previous-generation versions remain supported.

The difference is that PS5 now has its own native path. Players staying on PS4 can keep playing Fallout 76, while PS5 owners finally have a version designed for their console rather than an older application doing the job.

Is the PS5 upgrade worth using?

For anyone who already owns a PS5, Fallout 76 PS5 vs PS4 strongly favours installing the native client. Targeted 60 FPS, VRR, 1440p support, improved current-generation tuning and a dedicated PS5 application are meaningful upgrades even without a standard-PS5 4K target.

The only real inconvenience is the full redownload. Once that is out of the way, Fallout 76 PS5 vs PS4 is less about choosing between two equivalent versions and more about moving to the client Bethesda now intends PS5 owners to use.
