Fourth Legendary Mod support expands dramatically with The Slasher update because Bethesda now allows uniquely named weapons and armour to add a fourth legendary star.
This is separate from the new built-in unique effects listed in the patch notes. A named weapon can have its identity-defining special effect and still participate in the ordinary legendary-star system.

How the Fourth Legendary Mod system changed
Before The Slasher, many unique items were valuable specifically because their legendary rolls were fixed or unusual. The new crafting system lets eligible named items be rerolled through mod changes and upgraded with a fourth star.
Bethesda describes this as giving new life to more than 80 unique weapons found or crafted across Appalachia.
Unique effect versus fourth star
The patch notes list effects such as Bleed Damage on Super Slasher, +25% explosive radius on Bunker Buster and AP restoration on Slug Buster. Those named effects are not simply the fourth-star mod.
Think of the unique effect as the weapon’s special identity, with the legendary slots layered on top through the crafting system.
How to add a fourth star
For a Fourth Legendary Mod, use the appropriate weapon or armour workbench and the Legendary Mod crafting interface on an eligible unique item. The game will show the available fourth-star slot and required resources for your character.
Bethesda has not published one universal cost table in the release notes, so use the live workbench value instead of relying on an old PTS screenshot.
Can every unique weapon be modified?
Bethesda says unique weapon crafting applies to the more than 80 uniquely named weapons in the new system, and the release notes provide a long table of updated unique effects.
Some special or legacy edge cases can still behave differently, so confirm the item exposes the Legendary Mod interface before destroying another copy.
Why fourth stars matter more on named gear now
Players no longer have to choose between a fun unique effect and a poor fixed legendary roll. A named item can become a serious build piece if its unique behaviour combines well with a tailored four-star setup.
That is the real significance of the update, not simply adding another star to the tooltip.
Legendary economy changes
The same patch increases Scrip returned from legendary scrapping and standardises sell and Purveyor values by star count. Those changes support a crafting loop where more players will modify and test gear.
Why the fourth star is not the whole build
A poor first-to-third-star setup does not become automatically great because a fourth effect is added. Fallout 76 Fourth Legendary Mod choices should be the final layer of a coherent build, not the first decision.
Test the weapon with its core legendary setup before spending rare resources on the extra slot.
Fourth Legendary Mod is separate from the unique named effect
Fourth Legendary Mod terminology can be confusing because the patch also gives named weapons effects outside the normal star list. Super Slasher’s Bleed Damage and Slug Buster’s AP restoration are examples of unique identity effects, not proof that the fourth slot is already filled.
The workbench is where you see the actual Fourth Legendary Mod slot and the other Legendary Mod slots available on your copy.
When to spend a fourth-star mod
Fourth Legendary Mod resources are better saved for a weapon you have already tested with a strong three-star setup. Adding an expensive final effect to a weak or mismatched base roll does not solve the earlier build problems.
The Slasher update’s improved Scrip returns help the broader crafting economy, but they do not make every experiment free.
