Slasher Not Starting usually means the opening broadcast or Seasonal quest has not been triggered yet, not that the entire Fallout 76 update failed to install.
The Slasher is also unusual because Bethesda is releasing its story in layers over multiple weeks. A character who has completed the currently available material may simply be waiting for the next broadcast rather than suffering a broken quest.

How to fix Slasher Not Starting
Open the Pip-Boy Radio tab and look for Breaking News first. Tune in long enough for the broadcast to register, then check the Side section of the Data tab for the Seasonal The Slasher quest and track it if it is available.
If nothing appears, confirm Fallout 76 is fully updated to version 1.7.26.13 or later. The Slasher launched with the September 15 update, so an older client cannot start the new story layer.
Check the Seasonal quest in your Pip-Boy
Bethesda used the Seasonal The Slasher quest during testing to point players toward whatever activity was currently active. The live release notes keep the same broadcast-led structure, with The Debunker Radio telling players what is happening and what to do next.
Tracking the Seasonal quest is useful because The Slasher is not structured like one long conventional quest chain that immediately dumps every objective into your log.
Breaking News is the starting point
Do not search the map for The Debunker before listening to Breaking News. Bethesda explicitly identifies the Breaking News broadcast station as the way to begin the experience.
Once the opening message has played, the quest can direct you into mask collecting, grave digging, Infestations and later story activities as Bethesda unlocks them.
You may already be caught up
The story unfolds over the weeks following the update. If you completed the current activity and no new objective appears, there may be nothing else available on that character yet.
Community testing also indicates older weekly layers remain catch-up friendly, but the live cadence should be treated as Bethesda-controlled rather than assumed to reset at a specific unannounced hour.
Restart and server checks
If Slasher Not Starting continues even though Breaking News exists but refuses to trigger, leave the station, restart the game and load into a fresh world before trying again. Also check Bethesda service status if multiple online systems are behaving strangely.
Slasher Not Starting is more likely to be a local quest-state problem when the rest of Fallout 76 works normally and other players can access the broadcast.
What not to do
If Slasher Not Starting is your only problem, do not abandon unrelated main quests, reinstall the entire 100 GB-plus game or delete character data just because the first marker is missing. Start with the radio, quest tracking and a clean relog before using destructive troubleshooting.
A good troubleshooting order
Check the radio, Seasonal quest, game version, fresh world and Bethesda service status in that order. This narrows Fallout 76 The Slasher Not Starting without turning a simple trigger issue into a full reinstall.
Only after those checks fail should you consider repairing game files or opening a support ticket.
When Slasher Not Starting is actually normal
The rollout itself can make Slasher Not Starting look like a bug after you have completed the current chapter. Bethesda says new story parts arrive over multiple weeks, so a character can be completely healthy and simply have no later broadcast available yet.
Compare your active Seasonal The Slasher objective with the current live stage before repairing files. If you have already done what the broadcast asked, waiting for Bethesda’s next layer is safer than repeatedly resetting a working quest.
Character-specific checks
If one character can start the story and another cannot, the installation is clearly not the main problem. Check whether the second character already has Seasonal The Slasher hidden among Side quests or has partially advanced the opening radio state.
Slasher Not Starting on only one character is therefore more likely to be quest-state trouble than a 100 GB patch problem.
