Vesna or Vodyanitsa is the main Genshin Impact 7.1 Phase 1 decision because both new five-stars run together from the September 23 update.
The short answer is that Vesna is the better pull if you need a new on-field Anemo damage dealer, while Vodyanitsa is the safer account-wide pick if you need healing, buffs and Hydro support. They are designed to work well in the same Stellar Swirl ecosystem, but they solve very different roster problems.

Vesna or Vodyanitsa: the quick comparison
| Character | Best for | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Vesna | New on-field DPS, Stellar Swirl damage, exploration | Needs field time and team support |
| Vodyanitsa | Healing, buffs, Hydro support, Stellar Swirl teams | Lower personal carry damage |
If you can only choose one, start with role scarcity. An account with several strong carries usually benefits more from Vodyanitsa. An account lacking a modern damage dealer may get a bigger immediate jump from Vesna.
Why pull Vesna?
Vesna is a five-star Anemo Sword character who converts Cryo Swirl into Stellar Swirl and uses Spirit Blades as the core of her damage loop. She builds Sword Essence, then spends it to command stronger attacks, while her Burst restores resources and deals AoE Anemo damage.
She also brings exploration value because her Vila ability allows flight. That does not make her automatically stronger in combat, but it gives her utility outside Abyss and boss fights that a pure damage spreadsheet misses.
Why pull Vodyanitsa?
Vodyanitsa is a five-star Hydro Catalyst support whose Skill transforms her into Water Imp form. While singing, she heals the active character, lowers enemy Hydro and Cryo resistance and boosts the active character’s ATK.
She also improves Stellar Vortices by reducing enemy Anemo resistance and increasing Stellar Swirl damage. That makes her an especially natural partner for Vesna, but she is not limited to one team if your roster can use Hydro application, healing and offensive support.
Which one is better for a new account?
A newer account should usually favour the character that fixes the bigger weakness. If you have no dependable carry, Vesna gives you a clear on-field centrepiece. If you already have a capable DPS from a previous banner or free selector, Vodyanitsa may improve several teams instead of competing for field time.
Do not forget the anniversary selectors when making this decision. The free limited pool includes damage options such as Varesa and Clorinde, which can reduce the need to spend Primogems on another carry if you are happy to build one of them.
Weapons and investment
Vesna’s signature Sword is Beyond the Chrysalis, while Vodyanitsa’s signature Catalyst is Hymn of the Maelstrom. Neither signature is required to make the character functional. Vesna has accessible Sword alternatives, and Vodyanitsa can use support Catalysts such as Prototype Amber.
If your budget is tight, character first and signature weapon second is the safer rule. A strong four-star alternative on the right character is more useful than a premium weapon for a character you failed to pull.
Can you pull both?
You can, but both banners share the same character-event pity and each character still needs a separate five-star result. The anniversary rewards help, yet 20 free wishes are nowhere near enough to guarantee two featured five-stars from zero pity.
If you are starting the patch with a guarantee or high pity, pulling both becomes more realistic. Otherwise, choose the character whose role you would still value six months from now, not just the one with the flashier launch trailer.
Best choice for most established accounts
For an established roster with several built DPS characters, Vodyanitsa has the broader argument because supports tend to age better and occupy less field time. Vesna becomes the stronger personal choice if you specifically want to build around Stellar Swirl, need Anemo damage or value her flight mechanic.
Check the final character trials and Event Wish notices on the official Genshin Impact website before spending. Trials are also useful for deciding whether you actually enjoy each character’s movement and rotation.

Can you use Vesna or Vodyanitsa together?
Yes. Vesna or Vodyanitsa is not an either-or team-building choice if you own both. Vodyanitsa directly supports the Stellar Swirl mechanics that Vesna uses for damage.

So what team can I put for Vesna that is not Vodynaittsa
You don’t have to run Vodynaittsa with Vesna. There are a few alternatives depending on the content and who you’ve already built. Send me your available characters and I’ll put together the strongest option from what you’ve got.
