Pokémon GO Special Backgrounds are collectible souvenir designs that appear on a Pokémon’s summary screen and commemorate a particular event, theme or moment. They are cosmetic rather than a battle bonus, but they can make an otherwise ordinary catch much more desirable to collectors, especially when the Pokémon is also Shiny, perfect-IV, costumed or otherwise difficult to replace.

What Pokémon GO Special Backgrounds actually are
Pokémon GO Special Backgrounds were introduced as a worldwide counterpart to the Location Backgrounds first used at real-world events. When a Pokémon has one, its summary screen periodically cycles between the normal background and the collectible event artwork. The background is attached to that individual Pokémon, so two catches of the same species can look different if only one received the event design.
The important distinction is that Pokémon GO Special Backgrounds celebrate an event or theme, while Location Backgrounds celebrate a real place. A GO Tour design, team-themed design or anniversary design is a Special Background; artwork tied to a specific city, venue or participating location is normally a Location Background. Players still sometimes call both “cards,” which is why the terminology can get muddled.
How to get Pokémon GO Special Backgrounds
There is no permanent button that adds Pokémon GO Special Backgrounds to Pokémon you already own. They are distributed through selected encounters while an eligible event is active. Historically raids were a major source, but by 2026 the game has used backgrounds much more widely through wild encounters, Field or Timed Research, GO Pass rewards, Community Day encounters and other event-specific methods.
| Source | What to expect |
|---|---|
| Raids and major events | Eligible bosses may have a chance to carry the advertised background after a successful catch. |
| Research or GO Pass | Some encounters are guaranteed or specifically advertised with a background. |
| Wild/event encounters | Selected events can give featured wild Pokémon a chance to carry one. |
| Community Day | From 2026, featured Community Day Pokémon can be offered with a yearly Special Background during qualifying encounters. |
Always read the event wording carefully. Pokémon GO Special Backgrounds are often a chance rather than a guarantee, and the same species caught outside the stated source or time window may not qualify. An event can also give different backgrounds to different Pokémon, so “I caught the right species” is not always enough by itself.
Do Special Backgrounds stay after evolving or trading?
A collectible background is meant to stay with the individual Pokémon rather than vanish when you close the event. That makes Pokémon GO Special Backgrounds worth protecting if you care about collection history. Evolving a Pokémon does not normally strip away its souvenir background, and background Pokémon can also be traded. A trade can change IVs, however, so do not trade a valuable perfect-IV background Pokémon just to move it between accounts unless you are happy for its appraisal to reroll.
Some background Pokémon also interact with special mechanics. Fusion events have used paired backgrounds to create special background variants on fused Pokémon, for example. Those rules are event- and species-specific, so treat them as exceptions rather than assuming every Pokémon GO Special Backgrounds catch will create a new design through evolution, Mega Evolution or Fusion.
How to keep track of collectible backgrounds
The easiest habit is to favorite anything with a background before doing a transfer clear-out. Give especially rare combinations a tag as well: Shiny plus background, hundo plus background, costume plus background, or a background from an event you physically attended. Because Pokémon GO Special Backgrounds are cosmetic, the game will not stop you treating one like a normal duplicate unless another protection rule applies.
For collectors, the real value of Pokémon GO Special Backgrounds is the story attached to the catch. They can record an anniversary, GO Tour, GO Fest, team event or one-off collaboration long after the event itself has disappeared, which is why deleting one by accident is far more annoying than its battle stats might suggest.
For current events and availability, check the official Pokémon GO website, because collectible backgrounds, featured species and Showcase eligibility can change from event to event.
