Pokémon GO Catch Assist: How to Unlock and Use It

Pokémon GO Catch Assist is a Great Buddy perk that gives your active Buddy a chance to help when a wild Pokémon knocks your Poké Ball back during a catch encounter. Instead of the ball simply falling away, your Buddy can appear at the bottom of the screen and bounce it back toward the Pokémon for another chance to land the throw.

Unlock Great Buddy first

Pokémon GO Catch Assist unlocks when that specific Buddy reaches Great Buddy.

Great Buddy requires 70 total Affection hearts.

Earn hearts by feeding your Buddy, walking together, playing, battling, taking snapshots and completing other Buddy activities.

The perk belongs to the Buddy relationship, so another Pokémon with no Buddy progress will not suddenly gain Catch Assist just because one of your other Pokémon reached Great Buddy.

Your Great Buddy must be active

Set the Great Buddy as your current Buddy before catching.

Pokémon GO Catch Assist is tied to the Buddy that is currently adventuring with you, not simply any Great Buddy stored in your collection.

If you swap to a new Buddy, the new Pokémon needs its own Great Buddy status before it can provide the same perk.

The old Buddy keeps its progress for when you switch back later.

How Catch Assist triggers

During a wild encounter, a Pokémon can attack as the Poké Ball reaches it and bat the ball away.

When Pokémon GO Catch Assist activates, your Buddy appears and redirects that deflected ball back at the target.

The effect is automatic. There is no Catch Assist button to press and no timing input once the Buddy animation starts.

It is a chance-based rescue rather than a guaranteed response to every blocked throw.

You cannot force it every throw

Throwing balls directly into attack animations is not a reliable way to farm the perk.

Pokémon GO Catch Assist does not guarantee that the Buddy intervenes whenever the Pokémon bats a ball away.

Use normal catch technique first, especially for rare encounters.

Think of Catch Assist as a pleasant safety net that occasionally saves a Poké Ball rather than as the primary method for landing difficult Excellent Throws.

Does Catch Assist use another Poké Ball?

The Buddy redirects the ball that was already thrown.

You do not manually select or throw a second ball during the animation.

That is why Pokémon GO Catch Assist can feel especially satisfying with Ultra Balls or raid encounters where every throw matters, although the perk does not remove the normal catch probability rules.

The returned ball still has to result in a successful capture roll.

Throw bonuses still matter

A Catch Assist bounce can preserve the value of a throw rather than converting every rescue into the same generic hit.

Pokémon GO Catch Assist should therefore be paired with good Curveball and Nice, Great or Excellent Throw technique whenever possible.

The Buddy helps with the deflection, but it does not turn a badly aimed throw into guaranteed high catch odds.

Berries and ball type still matter as well.

Catch Assist versus Buddy Presents

Great Buddy unlocks two main perks: Catch Assist and Presents.

Presents are consumable items the Buddy occasionally finds while exploring. Pokémon GO Catch Assist is the separate encounter perk.

They do not share a limited daily use counter in the way players sometimes assume.

Reaching Great Buddy permanently unlocks both abilities for that Pokémon’s Buddy relationship.

Fastest way to reach Great Buddy

Collect several easy hearts every day: feed the Buddy, play with it, take a snapshot, walk and battle with it.

Excited mood can open extra heart slots and accelerate progress.

Pokémon GO Catch Assist only needs 70 total hearts, so it arrives far earlier than Best Buddy at 300 hearts.

A regular daily routine can unlock it without spending Poffins.

Is Catch Assist worth chasing?

Yes, if the Pokémon is going to stay your Buddy for a while.

The perk is passive, costs nothing after Great Buddy is reached and can rescue throws during everyday catching.

Pokémon GO Catch Assist will not replace good throwing technique, but it is one of the most immediately useful Buddy perks because it occasionally turns an annoying deflection into a successful hit with no extra action required from you.
