Guaranteed Lucky Trade Pokémon GO opportunities now come from three main systems: trading sufficiently old Pokémon while you remain under the permanent guarantee limit, becoming Lucky Friends with a Best Friend, or using a Lucky Trinket when one is available. Random Lucky trades still exist too, but they are not guaranteed.
Old Pokémon can guarantee a Lucky Trade
The permanent 2026 rule gives a guaranteed Lucky Trade Pokémon GO result when an eligible Pokémon has been stored since 2020 or earlier and the relevant guaranteed-trade limit has not been exhausted.
The lifetime threshold increased from 35 to 45 guaranteed Lucky Pokémon in the New Year’s 2026 update.
This rule is permanent, not a temporary New Year event bonus.
The guaranteed Lucky limit is 45
The old-Pokémon method stops being guaranteed once the account has reached the applicable limit of 45 guaranteed Lucky outcomes from this age-based system.
A guaranteed Lucky Trade Pokémon GO result creates Lucky Pokémon for both sides of the trade, but the guarantee is tied to the eligibility rules and account history.
Do not assume every 2020 Pokémon in storage will stay guaranteed forever after the cap is reached.

Lucky Friends guarantees the next trade
Best Friends have a small chance to become Lucky Friends after an eligible Friendship interaction.
When that happens, the next trade between the two Trainers is a guaranteed Lucky Trade Pokémon GO transaction. Both Pokémon become Lucky and the Lucky Friend status is then consumed.
You can become Lucky Friends with the same person again later through future interactions.
Lucky Trinkets can force Lucky Friend status
Lucky Trinkets are limited items that can turn an eligible Great Friend or higher into a Lucky Friend when the item’s current rules allow it.
That makes the next trade another guaranteed Lucky Trade Pokémon GO result without waiting for the random Lucky Friend trigger.
Lucky Trinkets are usually tied to specific GO Passes or events, so their availability is not permanent.
What does Lucky actually do?
Lucky Pokémon require less Stardust to power up and have a much higher minimum IV floor than a normal trade reroll.
A Lucky trade guarantees at least 12 Attack, 12 Defense and 12 HP IVs for the resulting Pokémon.
That does not guarantee a perfect 15/15/15, but a guaranteed Lucky Trade Pokémon GO attempt is an excellent way to build strong expensive Pokémon at a lower long-term Stardust cost.

Does an old Pokémon always become Lucky?
Not after the age-based guarantee allowance has been used.
Older Pokémon still have an increased chance to turn Lucky in ordinary trading, but chance and guarantee are different things.
The guaranteed Lucky Trade Pokémon GO rule specifically depends on the permanent age threshold and the account remaining eligible under the guarantee cap.
If you are trading a treasured old Pokémon, check your own Lucky history rather than assuming the outcome.
Guaranteed does not mean perfect
Lucky status guarantees the stronger 12/12/12 IV floor, not a hundo. The final three IVs are still rolled inside the Lucky range.
That means even a carefully planned guarantee can produce an 80 percent Lucky Pokémon. The real guarantees are Lucky status, lower power-up Stardust cost and the improved IV floor.
Which Pokémon should you use for a guarantee?
Use the guarantee on something expensive or genuinely useful: a Legendary, strong raid attacker, Master League candidate or rare Pokémon you want to power up.
The Stardust discount is much more valuable on a Pokémon that would otherwise cost hundreds of thousands to build.
A guaranteed Lucky Trade Pokémon GO opportunity spent on common low-level storage filler is not harmful, but it wastes much of the practical benefit.
Normal trade rules still apply
A Pokémon still needs to be tradeable. Mythical Pokémon that cannot normally be traded remain blocked, and a Pokémon that has already been traded cannot be traded again.
Special Trade limits and Stardust costs can also apply.
A guaranteed Lucky Trade Pokémon GO result changes the Lucky outcome; it does not bypass every other trading rule.
Best method in 2026
Use the old-Pokémon guarantee carefully until the 45-trade allowance is exhausted, preserve good Lucky Friend trades for valuable targets and use Lucky Trinkets when their event rules make sense.
Those three systems make guaranteed Lucky Trade Pokémon GO planning much more controllable than it was in the early years. The important part is knowing which guarantee you are using before committing a rare Pokémon.
