Pokémon caught after Mega Raids during Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale may have a new Mega Evolution-themed Special Background.

These backgrounds are not simply static collectibles.

If a Pokémon with the Mega Evolution-themed Special Background is Mega Evolved, the background receives additional visual effects for the duration of that Mega Evolution.

The Special Background can appear on eligible Pokémon caught from Mega Raids during both Mega Ascension and Mega Finale.

Mewtwo caught following Mega Mewtwo X or Mega Mewtwo Y Super Mega Raids can also receive a Special Background, making those encounters particularly valuable for collectors.

Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale Bonuses

Several major bonuses are active during the main Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale weekend.

No Remote Raid Limit

There will be no Remote Raid limit on September 5 or September 6.

This is especially useful for Trainers hunting Mega Mewtwo X, Mega Mewtwo Y or specific Mega Evolution Special Backgrounds.

Extra CP for Mega-Evolved Pokémon

All Mega-Evolved Pokémon receive an additional CP boost during the Mega Finale weekend.

That makes Mega Evolution even more useful while taking on the event’s unusually large raid pool.

GO Pass Deluxe Bonuses

Trainers who upgrade to GO Pass Deluxe: Mega Finale can unlock additional bonuses including:

  • Bonus Candy from Mega Raids
  • Bonus Candy XL from Mega Raids
  • Bonus XP from Mega Raids
  • Increased Shiny chances from certain Mega Raids
  • Increased Shiny chances from certain event Pokémon encounters

These bonuses are tied to the Deluxe pass rather than being available to every Trainer automatically.

Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale Timed Research

The wider Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale experience begins with branching Timed Research.

Trainers choose between:

  • Chespin
  • Fennekin
  • Froakie

Completing the research unlocks the corresponding path through GO Pass: Mega Finale.

ChoiceMega Evolution goal
ChespinMega Chesnaught
FennekinMega Delphox
FroakieMega Greninja

The free GO Pass contains enough Mega Energy to Mega Evolve the chosen partner once.

GO Pass Deluxe provides additional Mega Energy that can help raise the Mega Level of the chosen Pokémon further.

Our Pokémon GO Mega Ascension guide covers the lead-in event and branching path in more detail.

Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale GO Pass

GO Pass: Mega Finale becomes available from August 31 at 10:00 a.m. local time after completing the branching Timed Research.

The pass continues the journey with whichever Pokémon the Trainer selected.

Free rewards include encounters, Candy, Link Charges and Mega Energy associated with the chosen Kalos first partner Pokémon.

A Deluxe upgrade adds additional rewards, bonuses and a themed avatar shirt corresponding to the chosen path.

The three available shirts are:

  • Chesnaught T-Shirt
  • Delphox T-Shirt
  • Greninja T-Shirt

Can Pokémon Be Shiny During Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale?

Yes. Many of the Pokémon appearing during Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale are Shiny eligible.

Players with GO Pass Deluxe can also unlock an increased chance of encountering Shiny Pokémon from certain Mega Raids and certain event Pokémon encounters.

That boosted chance is a Deluxe bonus, so players using only the free event experience should not assume they receive the same Shiny increase.

With eight rotating habitats and a large Mega Raid pool, however, there will still be a substantial number of Shiny checks available throughout the weekend.

What Happens to Normal Raids During Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale?

The normal seasonal raid and event schedule is temporarily disrupted during Mega Ascension and Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale.

The following will not take place during the event period:

  • Daily Discoveries
  • Seasonal Mega Raids
  • Seasonal Five-Star Raids
  • Seasonal Shadow Raids
  • Seasonal Raid Hours
  • Seasonal Spotlight Hours

The dedicated Mega Ascension and Mega Finale raid schedule replaces them from August 31 at 12:01 a.m. until September 6 at 11:59 p.m. local time.

Is Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale Free?

The main Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale event is available to Trainers worldwide.

There is a free GO Pass route, while players who want additional rewards and bonuses can upgrade to GO Pass Deluxe: Mega Finale.

That means Trainers can participate in the habitats, wild encounters and raids without needing the Deluxe upgrade.

The paid pass primarily expands the rewards and bonuses available during the wider Mega Finale journey.

What Should You Prioritize During Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale?

Mega Mewtwo should be high on the priority list, particularly because X and Y are split across separate days.

If you want Mega Mewtwo X, prioritize Saturday, September 5.

If you want Mega Mewtwo Y, prioritize Sunday, September 6.

Collectors should also check Mega Raid encounters for the Mega Evolution-themed Special Background.

For wild Pokémon, the best habitat depends on what you need. Beldum, Ralts, Dratini, Bagon, Carbink, Skiddo and the three Kalos first partners are among the more interesting targets spread across the weekend.

Raid-focused Trainers should also plan around the hourly habitat schedule because the regular Mega Raid Bosses rotate alongside each active habitat.

Pokémon GO Fest 2026 Mega Finale is one of the most raid-heavy events of the year, but planning around the habitats will be just as important as assembling a Mega Mewtwo raid team. Every habitat appears twice, brings a different wild spawn pool and changes the available Mega Raid Bosses.

The key dates are simple: Mega Mewtwo X on Saturday, September 5, and Mega Mewtwo Y on Sunday, September 6. From there, Trainers can plan their preferred habitats, hunt Mega Evolution Special Backgrounds and work through their chosen Chespin, Fennekin or Froakie GO Pass path before Pokémon GO Fest 2026 comes to an end.
