The Road of Dust and Sorrow Dusters aren’t traditional undead zombies. They’re people caught in a biological disaster, driven by an obsession with genetically engineered GEEN berries and an addictive substance called fairy dust.
Painted Black Games explained the name in a Steam announcement on 8 September 2026, after visitors at gamescom asked about these enemies. Their backstory reveals why they attack people and what draws them back to the fields.
The Road of Dust and Sorrow Dusters explained

Dusters are victims of the failed engineered crop and the companies behind it. They aren’t dead people brought back to life or creatures hunting humans for food. Their fixation is on the GEEN berry patches.
Fairy dust alters their neural pathways, leaving them compelled to seek out the plants. Anyone who gets between a Duster and those fields is in danger.
That’s what sets them apart from familiar zombie enemies. They can be violent towards people, but they aren’t attacking to eat their victims.
What are GEEN berries and fairy dust?
GEEN berries come from an engineered crop tied to the experiment that was supposed to end famine. Instead, the plants became central to the catastrophe that devastated the world Katherine and Ava now travel through.
The Road of Dust and Sorrow Dusters repeatedly return to the berry fields. Their dependence on fairy dust explains why they pursue the crop so relentlessly, even when other survivors stand in the way.
The berries also make the affected people unusually strong and highly resistant to pain. That combination helps explain why the infected are such a serious danger even though they aren’t portrayed as traditional monsters raised from the dead.
Why do Dusters attack survivors?
They respond aggressively to people blocking their access to the berry fields. This is not an ordinary need for food: it is the result of the biological and chemical changes described in the game’s story.
The developer described one especially disturbing sight: Dusters drag human and animal bodies into the berry rows. The decaying remains fertilise the plants and help the toxic fields grow back.
That behaviour gives the crops a central role in the horror. The Road of Dust and Sorrow Dusters aren’t attacking at random for the sake of a zombie story. Their actions are part of a cycle that sustains the very plants responsible for their condition.
Why are most Dusters male?
The Road of Dust and Sorrow Dusters are mostly male. Painted Black Games explains that a flaw in the mutated crop slowly kills infected women, leaving very few women among the roaming groups.
That doesn’t mean no women are infected. The developer describes roaming groups as almost exclusively male, not entirely male.
Why didn’t the authorities stop the outbreak?
Special forces were deployed, but by then it was too late. Authorities had underestimated the biological danger, treating the infected as people with substance dependence instead of recognising the outbreak for what it was.
The Road of Dust and Sorrow Dusters are also a reminder of how the crisis was made worse by the response to it. The outbreak was not simply a monster invasion; it began with human decisions.
How do Dusters affect Katherine and Ava?
Katherine is travelling with her daughter Ava through the remains of civilisation. The Road of Dust and Sorrow Dusters make that journey dangerous, particularly around the overgrown crop patches and abandoned places they must pass.
The game mixes exploration and puzzles with encounters where Katherine may fight or escape. The September post explains the Dusters’ story and motives, rather than offering a combat walkthrough.
You can try the opening act through the free extended Steam demo. For the confirmed launch platforms and date, see our release date guide.
The Road of Dust and Sorrow Dusters are frightening because they’re victims too. They keep returning to the failed crop that destroyed their lives, trapped in a cycle that helps its toxic fields spread.
