The Road of Dust and Sorrow demo lets you play all of Act 1 for free on Steam. Painted Black Games released the expanded version on 16 October 2026, replacing the shorter demo from earlier in the year.

If you tried the old demo, there’s a good reason to go back. The new one is twice as long, adds more story and improves the controls, interface and combat. It gives you a much fuller introduction to Katherine and Ava before the game launches on 3 December.

Open the official Steam store page for The Road of Dust and Sorrow and select Download Demo. Once it’s installed through Steam, launch the demo from your library. You don’t need to buy the full game to play this first act.

The expanded build is available on Steam as of 2 November 2026. The older message about the September demo being removed is no longer the relevant download notice; that version made way for the new October build.

The Road of Dust and Sorrow demo is available for PC through Steam. The full game is also coming to PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and Switch 2, but the October demo announcement is specifically for Steam.

How much story is in The Road of Dust and Sorrow demo?

The entire first act. Painted Black Games made that explicit in its 16 October Steam update. Players begin the story of Katherine and Ava, a mother and daughter crossing a ruined landscape where a failed engineered crop has left people changed and the world overgrown.

Act 1 introduces the central relationship between Katherine and her daughter Ava as they travel through a world devastated by a failed crop experiment. Expect exploration, environmental puzzles and the threat of Dusters along the way, rather than a standalone combat-only sample.

If you’ve been wondering why the enemies aren’t called zombies, our Dusters explanation covers the GEEN berries and fairy dust behind the outbreak.

What changed in The Road of Dust and Sorrow demo?

The biggest change is the amount you can play. Painted Black Games says the extended build is twice the length of the original and adds considerably more story. That’s the main reason to return if you played the earlier version.

There are improvements beyond the extra scenes too. The developer has adjusted the interface layout, combat, usability and control bindings in response to feedback, with the aim of making the game feel better to play.

The previous demo was taken down on 30 September while the team prepared this replacement. That explains the old expiry announcement some players may still find when looking through Steam news.

Will The Road of Dust and Sorrow demo saves transfer?

Save transfer has not been confirmed. Painted Black Games hasn’t said whether your Act 1 progress will carry over when the full game launches on 3 December. The announcement confirms the extended demo’s content and improvements, but not save compatibility.

You can enjoy the full first act now, but don’t assume you’ll be able to pick up from that exact point in the finished game. That will need a direct confirmation from the developer.

Will the full game play exactly like the demo?

The studio is still working on the full release. In its 26 October update, Painted Black Games said it was fine-tuning combat and resource scarcity, so the balance of encounters may change between the demo and December.

Steam lists full controller support for Xbox and PlayStation pads, and the developer recommends playing with a controller. Steam Deck compatibility is currently marked Unknown.

The developer reported 20,000 downloads of the extended demo in its 26 October update. It also thanked players for the feedback it was using to refine the game before launch.

When does the full game release?

The full version launches on 3 December 2026. Publisher Silver Lining Interactive has confirmed Steam, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Switch and Switch 2 for that day. Our release date and platforms guide covers those details.

The Road of Dust and Sorrow demo gives you a full opening chapter to try, without paying or waiting for December. Whether the atmosphere, puzzles and story work for you is something you can judge for yourself.
