What Is Unown Y in Pokémon GO?
Unown Y is one of the alphabet forms of Unown, a Psychic-type Pokémon first introduced in Generation II.
All 28 Unown forms share Pokédex number #201, the same typing and the same underlying stats. The only difference between them is the symbol represented by their body.
For collectors, however, each form matters separately.
Catching Unown M, for example, does not mean you have also collected Unown Y Pokémon GO. You need to encounter or trade for the Y form itself.
Unown Y Pokémon GO Type
Unown Y is a Psychic-type Pokémon.
Its letter form has no effect on its typing, so Unown Y behaves exactly like every other Unown form in battle.
Unown Y Weaknesses
As a Psychic-type Pokémon, Unown Y Pokémon GO shares the same weaknesses as the rest of the Unown alphabet.
Unown is primarily sought after as a collectible rather than a strong battle Pokémon, so its weaknesses are rarely the main reason Trainers hunt for a particular letter.
Unown Y Resistances and Defenses
Unown Y also shares the same defensive profile as every other form.

Based on Psychic typing. Abilities may modify these matchups.
The Y shape is purely a form difference and does not provide any stat, type or battle advantage.
How to Get Unown Y in Pokémon GO
The most realistic way to obtain Unown Y Pokémon GO is during a special event that specifically features the Y form.
Unown can technically appear in the wild outside events, but encounters are exceptionally rare.
Pokémon GO has used individual Unown letters throughout its history for Safari Zones, GO Fest events, promotional events and other live experiences. The letters selected usually relate to the name, location or theme of the event.
Unown Y has been featured in previous events, including a Pokémon GO Special Weekend in Japan in April 2019, where T, Y, N and I were available.
That event history does not mean Unown Y is permanently available in those locations. Unown event availability is temporary.
Is Unown Y Available in the Wild?
Yes, but finding Unown Y Pokémon GO randomly in the wild is extremely difficult.
Unown is one of Pokémon GO’s rarest ordinary wild encounters. Even if you somehow encounter a wild Unown, there is no guarantee it will be the Y form you need.
For anyone deliberately trying to complete the alphabet, waiting for events featuring specific letters is considerably more practical.
The Unown event history shows just how frequently different forms rotate depending on the event rather than having fixed regional homes.
Can Unown Y Be Shiny in Pokémon GO?
Yes, Shiny Unown Y is available in Pokémon GO.
Unown is currently included among Pokémon with available Shiny forms, although Shiny availability for individual Unown encounters can depend on how that form is being distributed during a particular event.
That makes Shiny Unown Y Pokémon GO significantly harder to hunt than a Pokémon that appears regularly in the wild.
Your best opportunity is generally an event featuring repeated Unown Y encounters with Shiny eligibility.
Unown Y Pokémon GO Stats
All Unown letters share the same underlying base stats.
336There is therefore no competitive difference between Unown Y and any other letter.
Unown’s appeal comes overwhelmingly from rarity and collection rather than battle performance.

Is Unown Y Regional?
No. Unown Y Pokémon GO is not a permanent regional Pokémon.
Unlike Pokémon such as Klefki or Kangaskhan, Unown Y does not have one fixed part of the world where it normally appears in significant numbers.
Instead, Unown forms are heavily tied to events.
A particular city or country may receive Unown Y during an event, but that does not make the letter permanently exclusive to that location.
That distinction is particularly important when looking at older Unown event lists.
Does Unown Y Evolve?
No. Unown does not evolve in Pokémon GO.
You therefore do not need Candy to turn another Pokémon into Unown Y, and there is no evolution after catching it.
Each Unown form is a standalone collectible.
Can You Change Another Unown Into Unown Y?
No.
There is no form-change mechanic that allows you to turn Unown A, M, T or another letter into Unown Y Pokémon GO.
The form is fixed.
If Y is missing from your Unown collection, you need to catch the Y form itself or receive one through a trade.
How Many Unown Forms Are There?
There are 28 Unown forms in total.
The collection includes all 26 letters of the alphabet from A to Z, plus the exclamation mark and question mark forms.
This makes Unown one of Pokémon GO’s most distinctive collection challenges because completing a single Pokédex entry is very different from completing the entire form set.
Is Unown Y Rare in Pokémon GO?
Yes. Unown Y Pokémon GO is rare outside events.
The difficulty of obtaining individual Unown letters depends heavily on event history. A letter that has appeared at several major events may be much easier to trade for than one with fewer appearances.
Even then, there is no reliable everyday method for deliberately spawning Unown Y.
When Y is announced for an event you can access, it is worth prioritizing the form while it is available.
Can You Trade Unown Y?
Yes.
Trading is one of the most practical ways to complete an Unown collection.
Another Trainer may have caught several Unown Y during a previous event and be willing to exchange one for a letter they are missing.
This is also why duplicate Unown can be worth keeping rather than immediately transferring.
If you already have several copies of Unown Y Pokémon GO, one of those extras could eventually help you obtain another missing form.
Should You Keep Duplicate Unown Y?
For serious Unown collectors, yes.
Unown availability varies dramatically between events, and not every Trainer has access to every letter.
Keeping spare Unown Y catches gives you something potentially useful for future trades.
The same applies throughout the alphabet: duplicates may look unnecessary initially, but they can become valuable when swapping letters with other collectors.
Why Unown Events Matter
Special events are the key to realistically completing an Unown collection.
Serebii’s Unown event history includes dozens of events featuring different combinations of letters, with the available forms often spelling names or words connected to the event.
That means Unown Y Pokémon GO can suddenly go from extraordinarily difficult to find to relatively easy to encounter during the right event.
Once that event ends, however, the opportunity may disappear again.
Watching upcoming GO Fest, Safari Zone and other major Pokémon GO event announcements is therefore one of the best strategies for completing the full alphabet.
