To unlock Institute of Natural Philosophy in Genshin Impact, you need to follow the permanent progression that controls Institute of Natural Philosophy. The Institute of Natural Philosophy is opened through Aqueous Tidemarks. Virgil’s quest leads into the submerged ruins, provides the Ancient Key used during the route and eventually leaves the Institute available for free exploration.
This guide focuses on the part that usually stops players around Institute of Natural Philosophy in Fontaine: the prerequisite, entrance, puzzle or quest flag that the map itself does not explain clearly. It also covers what to check if the expected Institute of Natural Philosophy interaction is still missing after you reach the right place.

The most reliable way to unlock Institute of Natural Philosophy in Genshin Impact is to clear the prerequisites first and then follow the local route in order. Before travelling across Fontaine for Institute of Natural Philosophy, check these conditions so you do not arrive at a locked door, empty cave or inactive mechanism.
- Reach the Court of Fontaine.
- Start Aqueous Tidemarks with Virgil near the Statue of The Seven.
- Follow the underwater quest until you obtain the Ancient Key.
Step-by-step route
- Track Aqueous Tidemarks and enter the former Liliacruces Forum ruins.
- Search the quest room for the Ancient Key.
- Use the key on the locked route that continues toward the Institute.
- Finish the quest’s deeper exploration and escape sequence.
- Return with the internal Teleport Waypoint once the Institute is open for normal exploration.
Players who want to unlock Institute of Natural Philosophy in Genshin Impact should keep the active quest or exploration objective tracked while moving between these steps. Around Institute of Natural Philosophy, vertical map layers, hidden cave entrances and state-based mechanics can matter more than horizontal distance, so check the map layer as well as the marker.
The Institute is an underground/underwater complex, so the surface marker does not show the usable entrance clearly.
A book at the end of one Institute hall becomes the transport point to Narzissenkreuz Ordo.
Why it can still look locked or incomplete
If the locked gate inside the ruins will not open, check whether you actually collected the Ancient Key during Aqueous Tidemarks. It is part of the quest-area search, not an item bought from an NPC.
If you still cannot unlock Institute of Natural Philosophy in Genshin Impact, compare your current objective with the prerequisite list before restarting the game. For Institute of Natural Philosophy, a missing quest flag is not fixed by repeating the final puzzle, and a hidden entrance will not appear just because the destination icon is visible.
Useful details before you leave the area
Finishing Aqueous Tidemarks is more reliable than trying to enter the Institute from clipped or unintended routes.
Once you unlock Institute of Natural Philosophy in Genshin Impact, activate the nearest Teleport Waypoint, domain marker or permanent shortcut before moving on. That turns later material farming, quest cleanup and collectible hunting around Institute of Natural Philosophy into a short return instead of a repeat of the full unlock route.
