Ratatan Multiplayer and Co Op Explained

header 30

Ratatan Multiplayer is central to the game’s identity because the rhythm commands and side-scrolling battles can be shared with other players rather than treated as a solo-only successor to older rhythm strategy games. The Early Access period also included repeated work on matchmaking and connection stability, so anyone planning a group for version 1.0 needs to know the supported party size and whether each platform describes the same online feature set.

There is also a difference between a game having multiplayer and every player standing on the same machine. Ratatan Multiplayer is advertised as online co-op, and the platform stores add their own subscription requirements for console play. That makes it worth separating online party support, local play and cross-platform features before launch, especially for groups splitting across PC, Switch 2, PlayStation and Xbox.

Ratatan Multiplayer: how many players can play co op?

Ratatan Multiplayer supports online co-op for up to four players. Steam describes online co-op gameplay for as many as four, Nintendo Switch 2 lists online play for one to four players, and Xbox lists online co-op and multiplayer for two to four. Single-player is also supported, so co-op is not required to progress.

FeatureCurrent support
Single-playerYes
Online co-opYes
Maximum online groupUp to 4 players
Xbox cross-platform co-opListed by Xbox
Local couch co-opNot announced as a launch mode
Console online subscriptionRequired according to platform rules

The PlayStation Store has displayed a smaller online-player figure on some regional listings, while the official game description says Ratatan Multiplayer reaches four players and Xbox and Nintendo explicitly support that larger count. That discrepancy is worth rechecking at launch rather than reducing the overall game to two-player co-op based on one storefront field.

How does co op work in Ratatan?

Ratatan Multiplayer combines the same rhythm-driven command system with a shared run. Players control their Ratatans while commanding Cobun squads through rhythm inputs, and the game layers roguelike upgrades, positioning and Fever mechanics on top. A party therefore needs to keep rhythm individually while also reacting to what the rest of the group is doing on screen.

The game can become visually busy because more than 100 characters may be involved in a battle. Ratatan Multiplayer is not simply four characters attacking a boss in an empty arena. Each player’s Ratatan, Cobun formations, projectiles, status effects and Super Fever abilities can overlap, which makes clear positioning and knowing your character’s role useful even when everyone already understands the rhythm patterns.

Does Ratatan have crossplay?

Xbox lists Ratatan Multiplayer with cross-platform multiplayer and cross-platform co-op capabilities. The broader 1.0 release is simultaneous on Steam, Nintendo Switch 2, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, but the developer should still be checked at launch for the exact crossplay matrix across all four ecosystems. A capability flag on one storefront is not enough reason to promise that every platform can join every other platform without limitation.

The practical approach for mixed-platform groups is to verify the final 1.0 network menu before buying multiple copies solely for crossplay. Ratatan Multiplayer has clearly been designed around online group play, and multi-platform support was one reason the release needed more development time, but the exact account and matchmaking flow is the kind of detail that should come from the live build or a dedicated developer FAQ.

Do console players need an online subscription?

Yes, normal platform rules apply to online console play. Nintendo says Nintendo Switch Online is required for online features on Switch 2, while Xbox states that console online multiplayer requires an eligible Game Pass subscription tier. PlayStation online multiplayer normally follows PlayStation Plus requirements. Those subscriptions are separate from buying Ratatan itself.

PC players use Steam’s online services and the Ratatan PC requirements specifically call for a broadband connection for online co-op. Ratatan Multiplayer can still be played solo without forming an online party, so someone interested in the rhythm roguelike structure does not have to pay for a console multiplayer subscription unless they actually want the online features.

What changed during Early Access multiplayer development?

Early Access patch notes show repeated attention to Ratatan Multiplayer, including random-match room lists, ownership transfer behaviour and connection fixes. The developer also cited online support as one reason version 1.0 needed additional development time. That history explains why the October launch should be judged on the final build rather than an old Early Access networking impression.

For version 1.0, the safest confirmed expectation is online co-op for up to four players with solo play available. Ratatan Multiplayer is a substantial feature, not a side minigame, but details such as the complete crossplay matrix and any platform-specific lobby limits deserve one final launch-day check before making absolute promises to a mixed-platform group.
