Pokémon GO Mega Levels are permanent progression tiers attached to an individual Mega-capable Pokémon, improving catch bonuses and shortening the free Mega Evolution rest period as that Pokémon progresses. The modern system has Base, High and Max Levels for standard Mega progression, plus Super Max for eligible species that can unlock the newer fourth tier.
Pokémon GO Mega Levels table
| Mega Level | Requirement | Free rest period |
|---|---|---|
| Base | Mega Evolve that Pokémon once | 7 days |
| High | 7 total Mega Evolutions | 5 days |
| Max | 30 total Mega Evolutions | 3 days |
| Super Max | Reach Max, then spend 5,000 Mega Energy on an eligible species | 1 day |
Pokémon GO Mega Levels do not reset when the temporary Mega Evolution ends.

Base Level
The first Mega Evolution takes the Pokémon to Base Level.
At this stage, Pokémon GO Mega Levels already provide a major convenience because the rest period drops to seven days and the Pokémon can Mega Evolve for free once that timer finishes.
Base Level also provides catch Candy benefits while the Pokémon is actively Mega Evolved.
The initial Mega Evolution still requires the appropriate Mega Energy.
High Level
High Level is reached after seven total qualifying Mega Evolutions for that individual Pokémon.
The free rest period drops to five days.
Pokémon GO Mega Levels at High also improve catch-related bonuses, including better Candy XL opportunity and additional catch XP for Pokémon that match the active Mega’s supported types.
This is the first major target for players who use Mega Evolution during Community Days and spotlighted spawn events.
Max Level
Max Level requires 30 total qualifying Mega Evolutions.
The rest period falls to three days and the catch bonuses improve again.
Pokémon GO Mega Levels at Max are particularly valuable for Candy and Candy XL grinding because active Mega Evolution can produce significantly better rewards when catching matching Pokémon.
You do not need to pay Energy for every one of those evolutions if you are patient; waiting for the rest period allows free progression over time.

Super Max is a newer fourth tier
Super Max Level was added in 2026 for eligible Mega Pokémon.
A Pokémon must first reach Max Level, then the upgrade requires 5,000 of the relevant Mega Energy.
Pokémon GO Mega Levels do not allow every Mega species to reach Super Max automatically. Eligibility is tied to Pokémon supported by the newer Super Mega system.
The tier cuts the rest period to one day and improves the Mega’s catch bonuses further.
Super Max can add extra battle features
Eligible Super Mega Pokémon can receive additional Mega-only battle features, including an extra Charged Attack associated with the newer Super Mega system.
Those details can differ by species.
That makes Pokémon GO Mega Levels in 2026 more than a simple cooldown ladder, but you should check the actual Pokémon’s Mega page before assuming every species gains the same Super Max move.
Standard Base, High and Max bonuses remain the core system for ordinary Megas.
One Pokémon’s Mega Level is not another’s
Pokémon GO Mega Levels are tracked on the individual Pokémon rather than globally unlocking Max Level for every member of the species.
If you build one Charizard to Max, a second Charizard does not automatically become Max Level.
Modern updates also separate progression for certain Pokémon with multiple Mega forms more specifically than older guides describe.
Choose the individual Pokémon you actually want to invest in before repeatedly Mega Evolving it.
Cooldowns do not stop you Mega Evolving
The rest period is the timer until the next Mega Evolution becomes free.
You can spend Mega Energy to Mega Evolve before that timer expires.
Higher Pokémon GO Mega Levels reduce both the waiting time and the pressure on your energy stock, which is why steadily progressing useful Megas pays off long-term.
If you do not need the Mega immediately, waiting is the most energy-efficient choice.
Only the first daily progression counts
Mega Level progression is designed around repeated use over time rather than endlessly toggling the same Pokémon in one session.
Do not assume dozens of rapid Mega Evolutions in one day will instantly replace the normal progression cadence.
Check the next Mega Level information on the Pokémon’s summary screen to see the current progress and requirements.
Which Mega Level should you aim for?
High Level is a useful early target, while Max is ideal for Pokémon you frequently activate for events, raids or Candy XL grinding.
Super Max is a much larger energy investment and only matters for eligible species.
Pokémon GO Mega Levels reward long-term planning: unlock the first Mega Evolution, use free cooldowns whenever practical and concentrate repeated evolutions on Pokémon whose type bonuses you genuinely use.
