Zamazenta recently made its way into Pokemon Go, but are you familiar with the weakness and counters of this legendary Pokemon?

This is a shorthand guide piece designed to inform you what counters exist to defeat Zamazenta in Pokemon Go, whether you encounter them in raids or PvP, these weaknesses will apply in both.

What is the biggest weakness of Zamazenta in Pokemon Go?

The biggest weakness of Zamazenta in Pokemon Go is Flying-type Pokemon and attacks; while Psychic and Fairy-type Pokemon perform comparably, Flying-types have a slightly larger advantage against the moves Zamazenta can use.

If you’re short on good flying types though, don’t worry – Psychic and Fairy-types will perform almost as well, they just have an extra attack they’re weak to that they might have to deal with. This simply means they’re a riskier matchup, making Flying-types preferable, if not outright essential.

How did we find the most reliable counter to Zamazenta?

Despite its overall simplicity, the Pokemon series has a very logic-based depth to it, in that every type has its own set of weaknesses and strengths.

This means that in a game like Pokemon Go, where you sometimes even know what Pokemon you’ll be fighting in advance – in content such as Raids – and with Pokemon having fewer potential moves they can use, you can often make a determination as to what type will be the best counter option in battle before the battle even starts.

In the case of battling a pure Fighting type like Zamazenta, you have a few possible Types that it is known to have a weakness against in the Pokemon series. In Pokemon Go specifically, we can also see what moves it has, and determine which of these types it cannot fight back against.

Zamazenta, being Fighting-Type, will resist Bug, Dark and Rock-type attacks. It’ll also be vulnerable to Fairy, Flying and Psychic attacks, but all of these weakness targets result in the same amount of damage dealt, so we’ll look at what Zamazenta can do in battle to find out which makes for the best matchup.

Zamazenta, much like Zacian, has 4 fast attacks and 4 charged attacks. Of these, two of which are Steel-type attacks that counter any Fairy-Type Pokemon immediately.

Psychic-types similarly suffer against two of Zamazenta’s attacks due to their vulnerability to Dark-type moves, leaving Flying-type Pokemon as the best bet despite their weakness to Ice-Fang.

Weakness and counters Summary

All available counter types perform somewhat similarly against Zamazenta, but for those seeking the absolute ideal choice, Flying-Type Pokemon do eke out a slightly better advantage by being vulnerable to a single possible counter-attack, instead of the two that Fairy and Psychic-type Pokemon have to deal with.
