Shieldon has been in Pokemon Go raids lately, but what is the weakness of this fossil Pokemon? What counter should you use against it?

Shieldon is one of the Pokemon series Fossil Pokemon, known as the Shield Pokemon, and can be pretty durable for such a small dinosaur – luckily we have everything you need to know about its weakness to counter it in any battles you start.

What is the weakness and counter of Shieldon in Pokemon Go?

To recap, Fighting-Types and Ground-Types will have pretty much the same success at demolishing Shieldon, so use whichever is your personal best choice.

Water does work as a backup option, but is decidedly weaker than the others – it shouldn’t really be chosen if you have a viable Fighting or Ground-Type option to use instead. If you have absolutely no good Pokemon of either Type, then Water will work as a good stand-in.

How did we find the most reliable counter?

As is typical in any Pokemon title, including Go, precisely how strong a Pokemon is and what moves it uses may vary depending on the individual Pokemon in question, but there are a few things that remain consistent across all of any given species of Pokemon.

The easiest of these factors to exploit in battle is often the Pokemon’s Type.

Shieldon is a Rock/Steel Dual-Type, meaning that it’s actually capable of absorbing hits from a lot of different Types of Pokemon, but it does have a weakness or two we can use against it that are particularly potent.

Shieldon Type Interactions in Pokemon Go

Resistances
  • Bug
  • Dragon
  • Fairy
  • Ice
  • Psychic
  • Rock
  • Flying
  • Normal
    • Poison

The majority of these resisted types deal the typical 62.5% of their usual damage, but Shieldon happens to really excel in defending against the last 3 Types. Flying and Normal struggle to get past that armour, dealing only 39% damage due to double resistance.

But Poison-Types? Oh boy. They really have issues here. Shieldon actually has triple resistance against Poison-Types due to that typing. It’s a rough day to be a Nidoran trainer when a Shieldon turns up.

Weaknesses
  • Water
  • Fighting
  • Ground

Water will deal the typical Super-Effective 160% damage, but unfortunately for Shieldon both Fighting-Types and Ground-Types will deal a staggering 256% damage, significantly over double their usual amount per hit.

But which of those two is better?

What moves does Shieldon use in battle?

Fast Attacks
  • Iron Tail (Steel)
  • Tackle (Normal)
Charged Attacks
  • Ancient Power (Rock)
  • Heavy Slam (Steel)
  • Rock Tomb (Rock)

Water as a type is pretty much eliminated from consideration as it deals outright less damage than those it competes with as a possible weakness to exploit here, though it does resist Iron Tail and Heavy Slam nicely.

Between Fighting and Ground-Types, there pretty much is no difference. Both will deal the same amount of damage, and both are resistant to Rock-Type attacks. Shieldons Steel and Normal attacks just deal damage at the typical rate of 100%, so there’s nothing to be concerned about in either of those.

Shieldon Weakness and Counters Summary

To recap, Fighting-Types and Ground-Types will have pretty much the same success at demolishing Shieldon, so use whichever is your personal best choice. Water does work as a backup option, but is decidedly weaker than the others.

That’s about everything you need to know to counter Shieldon in Pokemon Go Trainers, good luck out there!
