Cranidos has been in Pokemon Go raids lately, but what is the weakness of this fossil Pokemon? What counter should you use against it?

Cranidos is one of the Pokemon series Fossil Pokemon, known as the Head Butt Pokemon, and can be pretty strong for such a small dinosaur – luckily we have everything you need to know about its weakness to counter it in any battles you start.

What is the weakness and counter of Cranidos in Pokemon Go?

Your best options for counters will be sticking to Grass and Ground-Types for the safest matchup with the most advantages. Steel-Type can work better than these in the best case, but at worst if it’s against Bulldoze Cranidos, Steel-Type might just get… well, bulldozed.

While Cranidos does have multiple possible weakness options to target in battle, Grass-Types and Ground-Types are simply the ones with the most advantages without additional negatives.

How did we find the most reliable counter?

As is typical in any Pokemon title, including Go, precisely how strong a Pokemon is and what moves it uses may vary depending on the individual Pokemon in question, but there are a few things that remain consistent across all of any given species of Pokemon.

The easiest of these factors to exploit in battle is often the Pokemon’s Type.

Cranidos is notably a pure Rock-Type, which makes this question pretty easy to answer, we just need to know about what Rock types are good at fighting and what they’re bad at fighting.

Rock-Types have 4 resistances and 5 weaknesses in total in Pokemon Go.

Resistances
  • Fire
  • Flying
  • Normal
  • Poison

Fairly unsurprisingly stuff here,

Weaknesses
  • Fighting
  • Grass
  • Ground
  • Steel
  • Water

What moves does Cranidos use in battle?

Fast Attacks
  • Take Down (Normal)
  • Zen Headbutt (Psychic)
Charged Attacks
  • Ancient Power (Rock)
  • Bulldoze (Ground)
  • Rock Tomb (Rock)

Zen Headbutt being one of two total moves in the Fast Attack category makes taking Fighting-Types against Cranidos a fair bit riskier than the others due to Fighting-Type being weak to Psychic attacks. If you just want Super-Effective damage without the added risk, Water-Type does the same damage rate without that counter risk.

However, both Grass and Ground-Types will resist some of Cranidos’ attacks while dealing Super-Effective damage with their own attacks.

Steel-Type technically resists the most, as it is strong against both Rock and Psychic, but ends up with a Ground-Type weakness that has the potential to ruin the entire matchup if you end up fighting against Bulldoze Cranidos. So if you strictly want the type with the most ways to exploit Cranidos weakness options, Steel-Type is a viable choice.

That doesn’t really account for the possible ways Cranidos can hit Steel-Types back though.

Cranidos weakness and counters Summary

Stick to Grass and Ground-Types for the safest matchup with the most advantages, Steel-Type can work better than these at best, but at worst if it’s against Bulldoze Cranidos, Steel-Type might just get… well, bulldozed.

Water-Type works well as an ok backup, and Fighting-Type should be avoided as an unnecessary risk compared to pretty much any other option on that list.

That’s about everything for this guide about the weakness of Cranidos in Pokemon Go, best of luck Trainer!
