This month’s Pokemon Go spotlight hours return us to the ever-popular Kanto starters, following on from Bulbasaur with Pokedex entry 004, Charmander.

Even if you already have enough Charmander or are simply otherwise not interested in the Pokemon, the spotlight hour will also feature doubled capture candy, so this can be a good chance to get enough candy to max out your Charizards CP.

When is the Pokemon Go Charmander spotlight hour?

The Charmander spotlight hour in Pokemon Go will be starting on July 13th at 6:00 PM and ends an hour later at 7:00 PM, as you might expect from the name of the event.

As always for spotlight hours, times are local, so don’t worry about handling anything to do with timezones and simply keep an eye on your usual clock.

What can we expect from the Charmander spotlight hour?

For anyone who isn’t used to these types of events yet and is simply here because they like Charmander in particular, Spotlight hours are, in short, 1-hour long sessions of all spawns being replaced with the featured Pokemon. It’s basically a limited-time version of the spawn effects you’d see for a community day of the same Pokemon.

That’s pretty great if you like what is featured in any given Pokemon Go Spotlight hour, so in this case, Charmander. That’s not so good if you’re not a fan of that Pokemon though.

Still, a Spotlight hour does offer you something else as a bonus in most cases as well. Though for this particular Spotlight hour, the bonus is doubled capture candy. This, unfortunately, means that, unlike most Spotlight hours, this one has very little to offer if you’re not looking for more Charmander and Charmander candy.

Is there anything else?

The only other major benefit of Spotlight hours such as this is they make excellent chances to try to hunt for the featured Pokemon as a Shiny, assuming they are Shiny enabled.

The good news for those Shiny hunters out there is that yes, Shiny Charmander is enabled in Pokemon Go already, so you can find them during this Pokemon Go Spotlight hour.

Be aware that the shiny rate isn’t actually boosted as it would be in a Community Day styled event – but you can still find plenty of Charmander during the event and simply play the odds against the Shiny rate that way if you’re intent on finding one. In short, it’s still a gamble if you’ll see a Shiny, but you’ll get to roll the dice on that chance a lot more than usual.
